Bed Frame Buying Guide NZ

Buying Guide · Bed Frames · NZ Edition Frames, bases, sizes, and under-bed storage, as well as the structural integrity of a Kiwi bedroom. Simple responses from the TSB Living team regarding online purchases in the absence of a showroom. If you only read one section Buying a bed frame? Get these four right. The majority of individuals purchase bed frames based on their aesthetic appeal and affordability. On a daily basis, you are confronted with these four decisions, in this specific order. The remaining information is contained in the subsequent chapters, which include the NZ-specific sizing that confuses buyers who rely on overseas guides. Determine whether to begin with the base or the frame. A bed base is essentially an upholstered platform that is used to support a mattress. Slats and a headboard are typically the components of a frame. Mattresses are present in both. There is an object against which to rest. Size is determined by the room, followed by the number of sleepers. Ensure that each open side has a minimum of 60 cm of walking space. Before a Super King tempts you, measure the doorway, the hall corner, and the stair turn. Complement the mattress with the appropriate support. The foam must not sag between the slats, which is why they require modest gaps. In a damp room, a solid platform necessitates a more rigorous airing regimen and provides a firmer underfoot feel. Budgeting with integrity. Upholstered bases are priced at approximately $109, while metal platform frames begin at approximately $90. The majority of mature Queens are priced between $149 and $500. Over and above that, you are purchasing upholstery and storage, not strength. When choosing a bed frame, there are three choices in the right order: the size your room can take, whether you want a plain upholstered base or a frame with a headboard and slats, and whether you need storage underneath. In New Zealand, that means picking from the local size ladder, Single through Super King, including the King Single that most countries don't have. The safe bet for most Kiwi couples is an upholstered Queen base or fabric frame, between $149 and $299. A metal or wooden Single does the job properly from around $90 for a kid or spare bedroom. When you buy a bed frame online, you can't sit on it first, and that worries people more than it should. A frame is mostly a structural decision, unlike a mattress, and you can read structure off a spec: what the legs are made of, whether the slats are timber or metal, how the headboard attaches, whether the base is one piece or splits for the stairs. This guide offers clear answers to each of these questions, based on the actual products we stock and ship across New Zealand. The first line of each chapter contains the answer, allowing you to quickly scan the bold text and make an informed decision. In this guide Bed frame, bed base, or slat base? (What the names actually mean.) A bed base is a platform with legs that is upholstered and onto which a mattress is placed directly. A headboard and a slatted center are typically included in a bed frame. The mattress is supported by a slat base, which is a metal or timber grid. The words are used loosely throughout the industry, including in our own product titles. Therefore, it is more important to read the picture and the description than the name. The four builds Upholstered platform Bed base A box with a solid or sprung top that is supported by legs and covered in fabric. There is no headboard. The most straightforward and cost-effective method of elevating a mattress from the ground and achieving a polished appearance. Headboard plus slats Fabric bed frame An upholstered headboard joined to side rails with timber or metal slats across the middle. The most common adult bedroom choice, and the one that makes a room look designed. Timber or steel Platform frame A low headboard, occasionally accompanied by a bare metal or wooden frame. Strong, lightweight, inexpensive, and readily transportable. There is nothing to scuff or stain. Frame plus drawers Storage bed A frame with drawers built into the base, or a lift-up top with a cavity underneath. Buys back a chest of drawers' worth of space in a small room. All four hold a mattress at the same height. What separates them is whether you get a headboard, storage, or neither. Anatomy of a bed frame 1 2 3 4 5 Five parts, and the two that fail first HeadboardThe part you lean against, and the whole reason a frame costs more than a base. Upholstered, timber or metal. Side railCarries the load into the legs. On cheap frames this is where a bolt works loose and the squeak starts. SlatsTimber or metal, spanning the middle. Gap width is what decides whether a foam mattress sags between them. LegsFour at the corners on most frames. Height sets whether under-bed storage boxes fit. Centre supportThe single most useful part on a Queen or larger, and the one budget frames leave out. Without it, slats bow. On anything Queen or wider, check the listing mentions a centre support leg. It is the difference between a frame that lasts and one that sags in the middle. What about bunks and mid-sleepers? A bunk is the same structural decision made twice in one footprint, and it’s how we categorize kids' bed frames. For the range, there are three shapes to cover: a standard bunk with two full berths, a mid-sleeper that lifts one bed to free the floor underneath for a desk or storage, and a triple that adds a wider bottom berth. 19 bunk frames with mid-sleepers from $282 and standard bunks from $429. Ceiling height, guardrail depth, ladder angle, and the minimum age for the top berth are all factors that are more critical in this location than in any other location in the range. Our bunk bed guide comprehensively addresses each of them prior to your final decision. Slats or a solid platform? (The type TSB sorts by) Our range is mostly slatted frames with 128 products and is the default recommendation for a New Zealand bedroom. A slatted center lets air circulate under the mattress, which is important in a cold, damp room. A solid platform base feels a little more solid underfoot and traps more overnight moisture, so it demands a more regular airing habit. If you want to browse by this distinction directly, we sort the range that way: slatted bed frames from $139 and solid platform bed bases from $109. Does the mattress care what is underneath it? Yes, more than the majority of individuals realize. The slatted center is crucial in a cold, damp New Zealand bedroom, as it allows air to circulate beneath the mattress. A solid platform is slightly firmer and retains a greater amount of moisture overnight, necessitating a more consistent airing schedule. We have published a comprehensive comparison of bed bases and slats for bedrooms in New Zealand. In summary, both options are viable provided that the airflow is effectively managed. Slat spacing is the sole absolute requirement. A sprung mattress is more forgiving, while foam and hybrid mattresses require modest gaps to prevent them from settling into the spaces between. Before making a purchase, verify the slat gap on the product page if you are combining a new frame with a foam mattress. Chapter 02 Materials Which bed frame material is best? (Metal, wood, upholstered.) Metal is the cheapest and easiest to move, wood is the most repairable, and upholstered fabric is the one that makes a bedroom look finished. At these prices, none is stronger than the others in any way that matters. Decide how long you’re going to keep it, how often it will be moved, and if you want a headboard to lean on. Metal: the flat and rental workhorse A steel platform frame is the cheapest way to get a mattress properly supported. Our metal range starts at $90 across 28 frames. It screws together in minutes, comes apart just as easily, and has survived being moved three times in two years without complaint. The compromises are real ones: no headboard on most models, and cheap steel joints can squeak once they have loosened, which a spanner will fix in a minute. If you’re furnishing a first flat, a spare room or a bed that’ll soon be on the move again, metal is the sensible money. Wood: repairable, quiet, kid-proof Timber frames sit in the middle in price and last well because they can be repaired. A loose joint takes a screw; a scuff takes sand and a touch-up. Our wooden range runs to 57 frames from $139, and the painted Hampshire range at $169 is the one parents keep buying for kids and teens, because a wooden headboard survives being kicked, drawn on, and climbed over. Wood is heavier to shift, and solid timber does not like being assembled and disassembled repeatedly. Fabric: the one that finishes a room Fabric frames and bases are used to encase a timber structure in linen, velvet, bouclé, or PU. They are silent, comfortable to rest against, and contribute significantly to the aesthetic and emotional appeal of a bedroom at an affordable price. With 94 products, this is the most extensive sector of our product line. The bouclé base is priced at $109, while the linen Innogen frame is priced at $239. The exchange is clean. Fabric marks are present, and unlike a wooden frame, they are not sandable. This is inappropriate for a children's room or a rental property that accommodates pets. It is typically the appropriate choice for a primary bedroom. The fabric range is illustrated in the spread. A bouclé or linen is light and shows every mark, and a bedroom is a room where hair oil, sunscreen, and coffee will all end up on the headboard eventually. Worth knowing before you pick a color. There is much more hidden in the darker grays and charcoals. None is meaningfully stronger than the others at these prices; choose on how long it stays and how often it moves. Chapter 03 Size What size bed frame do I need? (NZ sizes explained.) Queen is the New Zealand default for couples, and the size most of our frames are built around. The upgrade worth knowing about for a single adult or tall teenager is the King Single. It’s normal for a kid to move out of a cot, single. The measurements below are the standard NZ sizing, but the measurements listed on each product page are the ones to trust for the frame you are actually buying. The NZ size ladder Single King Single Double Queen King Super King Kids and bunk rooms Single 91 × 188 cm Suits a room from 2.4m × 3.0m The standard first big-kid bed and the size most bunks are built to. Fits a room a Double never would. Centimetres are standard NZ sizing. Frame footprints run larger than the mattress, so check the product page dimensions before you measure the room. Every NZ size, drawn to one scale Single91 × 188 cmKing Single107 × 203 cmDouble137 × 188 cmQueen153 × 203 cmKing167 × 203 cmSuper King183 × 203 cmSAME SCALE, BOTH AXES · LENGTH STEPS UP AT KING SINGLE Drawn to a single scale, so the differences are honest. Single and Double share the same 188cm length; everything from King Single up runs 203cm, which is the step that matters if either sleeper is over about 180cm. The room decides before you do Keep in mind that the frame must physically reach each open side of the bed, so leave at least 60 cm of walking space. Super King aspirations die in stairwells, hall corners, and small doorways, which is why our NZ-made Super King bases are made in two parts. Take the larger one if you are in between sizes. There has never been a complaint about an excessively wide bed. NZ quirk you should know: Double and Single are the same length at 188cm then everything from King Single up is 203cm. If one of the sleepers is over about 180cm tall, choose the 203cm club and consider Double as a one-adult size. If the room is genuinely tight, read our small bedroom ideas guide before you settle on a size. A Double with bedside tables usually beats a Queen jammed wall to wall. Buy the size the room can breathe around, not the biggest bed that technically fits through the door. TSB Living Team Chapter 04 Our Ranges Which TSB bed frame range is right for you? (Enkel, Boucle, Innogen, decoded.) Our range names describe the construction: Xclusive Metal is the bare steel platform, Boucle and Enkel are the upholstered bases without headboards, Hampshire is the painted wood for kids, and Innogen is the tufted linen frame for a main bedroom. The entire catalog translated into one honest table, so that the product pages make sense before you open them. Two practical remarks: The Boucle and Enkel bases show up underneath bed frames but don’t come with a headboard, so if you’re after something to lean against, team one with a headboard or step up to Innogen. There are a few ranges that appear under two product titles, with and without a "DS" prefix; they are the same product, so buy whichever is available in your size. If the bedroom is under about 3 metres wide, or there is no wardrobe worth the name, a storage bed usually earns its extra cost within a year. Drawers under the bed hold roughly what a small tallboy holds, in floor space you were giving to the bed anyway. If the room already has a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, skip it and put the money into the frame or the mattress. We sort storage two ways, and the names are worth knowing because they describe different mechanisms. Beds with drawers start at $289 across 16 frames. Gas lift beds start at $359 across 5 frames, and use gas struts to hinge the entire mattress platform upward on one deep cavity. Drawers or gas lift: how the two builds work SIDE DRAWERS Slides into the floor space beside the bed Reached without stripping the bedding Loses one side if the bed sits in a corner Best for what you touch weekly GAS LIFT One deep cavity, far more volume Needs the bed stripped back to open Best for what you touch twice a year Drawers win on access, gas lift wins on volume. In a room too narrow to pull a drawer fully out, gas lift is the only one that actually works. What storage costs you A storage frame runs roughly $150 to $250 above the plain version of the same size. Our drawer frames start at $289, and the gas lift range runs $359 to $499, topping out with the wooden Harrogate in Queen. That is real money, so weigh it against a tallboy from $119, which holds a similar amount and can leave the room with you. Two things to check before committing. Drawer frames are heavier and almost always ship flat-packed with more assembly steps than a plain base, and the drawers need clearance to open, so a bed pushed into a corner loses one side of its storage. If damp is a concern in your room, remember that anything stored under a bed sits in the least ventilated part of it; our guide to stopping damp damaging furniture covers what survives down there and what does not. Chapter 06 Combos Should you buy a bed and mattress combo? Buy the combo if you need both pieces anyway. It solves the frame, the base and the mattress in one decision and one delivery, the sizing is guaranteed to match, and the bundle price beats buying the two separately. Buy them apart if you already own a mattress you like, or if you want a specific mattress build that the bundle does not offer. Combos are the single largest part of our bed range, and they exist because the two most common bed-buying mistakes are both sizing mistakes: a Queen mattress ordered for a Double frame, and a frame whose slat spacing does not suit the mattress that arrives on top of it. A bundle removes both. Combo What you get Size Price Novo Bed and Bonnell Mattress Upholstered frame plus 15cm Bonnell spring Queen $502 Sovo Oak Frame and Bon15 Mattress Oak-finish frame plus Bonnell spring Queen $518 Browse the full combo range Frame, base and mattress bundles All sizes From $234 Prices checked 24 August 2026. Combo pricing moves with promotions more often than single items do. Combos are not only an adult decision. Bunk beds pair with two mattresses rather than one, which is where the sizing goes wrong most often, so we bundle those too: 44 bunk and mattress combos from $532, both mattresses matched to the frame. A Polli mid-sleeper with two Bon10 singles is the entry point at that price. The honest limit of a combo is mattress choice. Bundles pair a frame with whichever mattress makes the price work, and that is usually a Bonnell spring, which is firm, durable and the right call for a spare room or a first flat. If you sleep on your side, share with a light sleeper, or run hot, read the mattress buying guide first and buy the mattress on its own merits. The frame can still come from here. Chapter 07 Which to Buy Which bed frame should you buy? (Best for your situation.) Six situations cover most people reading this. Scroll the situations below and find yours. If you fall into two, solve the bed you sleep in every night first. The order to do this in 1 Measure the room Bed footprint plus 60cm of walking space on each open side. This decides the size before anything else does. Before you shop 2 Measure the route Doorway, hall corner, stair turn. Flat-packed frames clear most of it; one-piece bases are where it goes wrong. Before you order 3 Match base to mattress Check slat spacing against the mattress type, and confirm a centre support on anything Queen or wider. At checkout 4 Assemble on the spot Build it in the room it lives in. Leave every bolt finger-tight until the frame is square, then go round and tighten. Delivery day 5 Retighten at six months Ten minutes with the supplied key. This is what stops the squeak that makes people think a frame has failed. Twice a year Most bed-buying regret traces back to step 1 or step 2, and most bed-frame complaints trace back to skipping step 5. Situation 01 Best for a first flat or a tight budget A metal platform frame in the size your room takes, or an upholstered Boucle base if you want it to look less like student furniture. Both are honest: nothing fancy, nothing to fail. This is the right money for a stage of life where the bed may move flats twice in two years. Look for Steel platform, or bouclé base without a headboard Price tier $90 to $199 in most sizes Pick Why this one Price Xclusive Metal Platform · Queen Cheapest Queen that supports a mattress properly $99 Xclusive Boucle Bed Base · Double Upholstered look at metal-frame money $139 Enkel Bed Base · Single Platform base on legs, tidy in a small room $149 Skip the metal frame if you are a light sleeper sharing the bed. Steel joints can develop a squeak that timber and upholstered frames do not. Shop metal bed frames Situation 02 Best for couples upgrading to a proper bed A Queen upholstered frame with a headboard. This is the purchase that ends the squeaky-old-Double era, and the headboard is most of why it feels like an upgrade: it turns the bed into the thing the room is arranged around rather than a mattress on legs. Look for Queen, upholstered, headboard included Price tier $149 to $500 for most Queens Pick Why this one Price Innogen Bed Frame Grey · Queen Our #2 seller; tufted linen with a real headboard $249 Enkel Bed Base · Queen #3 seller; plain platform if you plan to add a headboard $199 Xclusive Boucle Bed Base · Queen Our #1 seller overall; texture without the headboard cost $149 Skip the Queen if the bedroom is under 3 metres wide. Shop Queen bed frames Situation 03 Best for kids and teenagers A painted wooden Single or King Single with a headboard, or a bunk if two share the room. Kids do not need upholstery, they need something that survives being climbed on and can be repaired rather than replaced. If the height forecast looks tall, buy King Single now and skip a purchase later. Our bunk bed guide covers the safety checks properly, and the rest of the room is in kids room furniture. Shop kids bed frames and bunks Situation 04 Best for a small room that needs storage A frame with drawers built into the base. In a room where a chest of drawers would block the door or eat the walking space, the storage has to go under the bed, because that floor is already spent. Expect to pay roughly $150 to $250 more than the plain version of the same frame. Look for Side drawers, or gas lift if the room is too narrow to open a drawer Price tier $289 to $659 Pick Why this one Price Rae Bed Frame With Drawer · Double Cheapest way into under-bed storage $299 Harrogate Storage Bed Frame · Queen Gas lift, wooden build, most storage volume in the range $499 Xclusive Aigen Daybed with Drawers Doubles as seating in a room that works twice $239 Skip the drawers if the bed goes in a corner. You lose one side of the storage, and a $119 tallboy would have held more. Shop gas lift beds Situation 05 Best when you are starting from scratch A bed and mattress combo. Moving to New Zealand, furnishing a first home, or kitting out a rental: a bundle solves the frame, the base and the mattress in one decision and one delivery, and the sizing is guaranteed to match. This is the least stressful way to buy a bed online. Then you are only buying a frame, and chapters 1 to 4 are your map. Shop bed and mattress combos Situation 06 Best for the guest room or the bach A plain base or a folding bed. Guests need clean comfort for a weekend, not your forever frame. At the bach, prioritise something that handles cold, damp months unattended, which means a base you can lift and air rather than a storage frame with fabric drawers full of trapped moisture. TSB Living Team Chapter 08 Complete the Bed What else you need to finish the bed The frame is half the bed. These six finish the job, and most of them get remembered a fortnight after the frame arrives and the room still does not work. 01 Mattress The frame is half the bed. Shop bedding 06 Mattress topper The cheapest way to change how an existing mattress feels when the new frame shows up its age. Shop toppers Chapter 09 FAQ Bed frame questions Kiwi buyers ask most What size bed frame do most NZ couples buy? Queen is the New Zealand default for couples and fits most main bedrooms with walking space on both sides. Step up to King or Super King only if the room is 3.5 metres wide or more. A Double suits couples in genuinely small rooms, but it is snug for two adults over a full night. What is the difference between a bed base and a bed frame? A bed base is an upholstered platform on legs that a mattress sits straight onto, with no headboard. A bed frame usually adds a headboard and side rails with slats across the middle. Both support a mattress at the same height; the frame is what gives you something to lean against. Do I need slats, or is a solid base better? Either works when matched to the mattress. Slats ventilate the underside, which helps in damp New Zealand bedrooms, and they suit foam mattresses provided the gaps are modest. A solid platform feels slightly firmer and traps more overnight moisture, so it needs a more regular airing habit. How much should I spend on a bed frame in NZ? In our range, metal platform frames start about $90 and upholstered bases about $109. Most adult Queens run between $149 and $500. Above that you are paying for storage drawers and upholstery rather than extra strength. Spend at the level the bed gets used. What size is a King Single, and who is it for? A King Single is 107 by 203 centimetres, wider and 15 centimetres longer than a standard Single. It is the best single-sleeper size in New Zealand, suiting teenagers, tall adults and guest rooms that host one person. If a kid's room has the space, it lasts through high school. Are storage beds worth the extra cost? In a room under about 3 metres wide, or one without a decent wardrobe, usually yes. Drawers hold roughly what a small tallboy holds, using floor space the bed already occupies. If you have a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, put the money into the frame or mattress instead. Will a bed frame fit up my stairs? Most flat-pack frames arrive in cartons that clear a standard stairwell, since assembly happens in the room. Larger one-piece bases are the risk. Our NZ-made Super King bases ship as a two-piece split base for exactly this reason, so check the carton dimensions on the product page first. Can I use my existing mattress on a new frame? Almost always, provided the sizes match exactly and the slat spacing suits the mattress type. Foam and hybrid mattresses need modest slat gaps so they do not settle between them; sprung mattresses are more forgiving. Check both the frame's internal dimensions and its slat spacing before ordering. Keep exploring Related guides More from the TSB Living team. How to Choose the Best Mattress for Couples in New Zealand?
You finally found a mattress you love. Supportive, comfortable, just the right firmness. There's only one problem: your partner hates it. Sound familiar? For most couples, mattress shopping is less about finding the perfect mattress and more about finding the least-bad compromise. One runs hot, the other gets cold. One is a light sleeper, the other tosses all night. One needs firm support for their back, the other sinks into anything too stiff. The result? Years of broken sleep on a mattress that never really worked for either of you. It doesn't have to be that way. In New Zealand, the options have expanded significantly in recent years, and that makes the decision both easier and more overwhelming. This guide cuts through it. What Makes a Mattress Right for Two People? A mattress you buy alone only needs to suit one sleep style. A mattress for couples needs to manage motion transfer, support two different body types, regulate temperature for two people, and ideally not leave one person lying awake while the other moves around. That is a longer brief than most people give it. The good news is that the best hybrid mattress for couples handles most of these demands well. A hybrid combines foam layers for pressure relief and motion isolation with an innerspring base for support and airflow. For most couples, it sits in the sweet spot. Which Mattress Type Works Best for Two People? Here is a straightforward comparison of the main mattress types and how they perform in a couple's context: Mattress Type Best For Drawbacks Memory Foam Pressure relief, motion isolation Retains heat, may feel too soft for heavier sleepers Hybrid Most couples need balanced support and comfort Heavier, more expensive Innerspring Hot sleepers, firm support seekers More motion transfer Latex Natural feel, cooling, durability Heavy, higher price point Cooling Foam Couples who sleep hot Less pressure relief than standard memory foam The best memory foam mattress for couples works well for light sleepers disturbed by partner movement, but if either of you tends to sleep warm, look specifically for a cooling foam variant or go hybrid. Does Size Actually Matter? Mattress Size Dimensions (NZ Standard) Best For Queen 153 x 203 cm Couples in standard bedrooms, most popular choice King 168 x 203 cm Couples who want more space or have a larger room Super King 183 x 203 cm Couples with children or pets sharing the bed King Single x2 107 x 203 cm each Couples with very different firmness preferences A queen-size mattress for couples works well in most standard NZ bedrooms and gives both people reasonable space. If budget and room size allow, stepping up to a best king-size mattress for couples makes a noticeable difference in night-to-night comfort, especially if either person moves frequently during sleep. When You Have Different Sleep Preferences? What happens when one of you needs a firm mattress, and the other finds it unbearable? This is more common than people admit, and it is one of the main reasons couples end up unhappy with a mattress they both agreed to in the shop. The best mattress for couples with different preferences usually falls into one of two categories: medium-firm hybrids with zoned support, or split firmness options where each side is independently configured. For couples with a significant weight difference, this matters even more. The best mattress for couples of different weights needs to support a heavier sleeper without feeling too firm for a lighter one. Zoned hybrid mattresses, where the support layers are firmer in the centre and softer at the shoulders, handle this better than most uniform foam options. Tackle the Temperature Problem Does one of you kick off the duvet while the other pulls it back on? You're not alone. Temperature is one of the leading causes of sleep disruption in couples. The best cooling mattress for couples typically features open-cell foam, gel-infused layers, or breathable hybrid construction. Look for mattresses with: Gel memory foam or copper-infused foam layers Breathable covers (Tencel or bamboo blends) Coil-based bases that allow airflow underneath Ready to Sleep Better? Here's What to Do Next The most comfortable mattress for couples is the one you both had a real say in choosing. Before you buy, agree on firmness preference, discuss whether motion isolation is a priority, check the return policy, and make sure the trial period is long enough to know whether it actually works for both of you. A good mattress is one of the few purchases that affects every single day. Mattress in a Box: Everything You Need to Know
Remember when buying a new mattress meant blocking out a Saturday, driving to a showroom, lying awkwardly on display beds while a salesperson hovered nearby, and then waiting weeks for delivery? Those days are mostly behind us. If you've been sleeping on the same old mattress for years and wondering what's changed, the short answer is: a lot. The mattress in a box concept has shaken up bedrooms across New Zealand and beyond, and honestly, it's not hard to see why people are switching. What Is a Mattress in a Box? A mattress in a box in NZ is exactly what it sounds like: a full-sized mattress that's been compressed, rolled, and vacuum-sealed into a compact box for easy shipping and handling. Once you cut the packaging open, the mattress expands back to its full shape within a few hours. Most are made from memory foam, latex, or a hybrid of foam layers, which is what makes compression possible without damaging the material. The process sounds almost too simple, and that's part of the appeal. No awkward maneuvering of a king mattress through narrow hallways. No waiting around for a delivery window. Just a box at your door, a pair of scissors, and a fresh start on your sleep. Why So Many People Are Making the Switch The best mattress in a box options aren't just convenient, they're genuinely good. The foam layers used in modern compressed mattresses have come a long way. Memory foam mattresses in a box, in particular, are popular because they contour to your body, reduce pressure on joints and back pain, and tend to sleep more quietly than traditional spring mattresses. If you share a bed, motion isolation is a real bonus: when your partner tosses and turns at 2 am, you're far less likely to feel it. What Size Do You Actually Need? This is where a lot of people get tripped up. The good news is that compressed mattresses come in every standard size, twin mattresses in a box options work well for kids' rooms or guest beds, while a full-size mattress in a box gives a solo sleeper a bit more stretching room. Couples usually gravitate toward a queen mattress in a box (the sweet spot for space and practicality) or go all out with a king mattress in a box if the bedroom can handle it. The best affordable mattress in a box options are usually found in queen and double sizes; there's more competition at those size points, which tends to drive prices down. King sizes carry a slight premium, but the price gap has narrowed considerably as the market has matured. Firm or Soft: How Do You Choose? Firmness is genuinely personal, which is why this question comes up so often. A firm mattress in a box tends to suit back and stomach sleepers who need more support at the hips and lower back. Medium feel mattresses are arguably the most versatile; they're forgiving enough for side sleepers while still offering decent support for anyone who moves around during the night. Plush options work best for side sleepers who want that cushioned, sinking-in feeling without sacrificing alignment. If you're unsure, medium is usually a safe bet. Most people find it hits the right balance, and many brands offer trial periods so you can test it out at home before committing. Setting It Up: Easier Than You Think Most people are surprised by how straightforward the unboxing process is. You drag the box to your bedroom (it's heavy but manageable), lift the rolled mattress onto your bed frame, cut the outer packaging, and then cut the inner vacuum seal. The mattress starts expanding almost immediately. Within a few hours, sometimes faster, it reaches its full dimensions. Most manufacturers recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before sleeping on it, partly to let any off-gassing from new materials dissipate and partly to allow full expansion. Worth the Upgrade? For most people, yes. The combination of competitive pricing, easy delivery, and genuinely improved sleep comfort makes the mattress in a box format hard to argue with. Whether you're outfitting a spare room with a twin, upgrading to a king for the master bedroom, or just finally replacing that mattress that's been in the family since the early 2000s, there's a compressed option that fits. Do your research on firmness, check the sizing twice, and look for a brand that backs its product with a decent trial window. Your back will thank you. With multiple mattress options available, you can find one that fits your comfort needs. Explore bedding and bedroom essentials at TSB Living.

The Ultimate Guide to the Best Mattresses for Hot Sleepers in New Zealand
There is nothing quite like the frustration of a restless night. You drift off to sleep, only to wake up three hours later drenched in sweat, flipping the pillow to the cold side for the tenth time. If you find yourself tossing and turning because your bed feels like a furnace, the culprit likely isn't just your duvet; it’s the slab of material you’re lying on. Standard foam mattresses are infamous for trapping body heat, acting like an insulator rather than a regulator. The goal of this guide is to help you break that cycle. We will explore the airflow, the best mattresses for the Kiwi climate, and how to choose the best mattresses for hot sleepers. Top Mattress Recommendations for Hot Sleepers Not all mattresses are created equal when it comes to thermodynamics. Here are the four primary technologies leading the charge in temperature regulation. 1. Gel-Infused Memory Foam For years, memory foam was the enemy of the hot sleeper. Because it is a dense, viscoelastic material designed to contour closely to the body, it naturally traps heat. However, modern engineering has introduced a cooling memory foam mattress. The Advantage: The heat retention issue of traditional foam is resolved by swirling liquid gel or gel beads into the material. The gel acts as a thermal conductor, absorbing excess body heat and moving it away from the surface. Advanced versions may also include infusions like copper or graphene, which are even more efficient at dissipating heat due to their high thermal conductivity. Best for: Sleepers who love the pressure relief of memory foam, specifically those with joint pain, but who don't want to wake up in a sweat. 2. Pocket Spring & Hybrid Systems If cooling is your number one priority, physics is on the side of the spring. The best cooling mattresses for hot sleepers are made by combining the comfort layers of foam or latex with a core of individual pocket springs. The Advantage: The key benefit of a king-size cooling mattress is that, instead of being filled with solid blocks of foam, the core of a hybrid consists of individually encapsulated springs, which creates a significant volume of space within the mattress, allowing the circulation of air. When you move on a queen cooling mattress, air acts as a bellows, pushing out warm air and pulling in fresh air. The introduction of a top layer of cooling foam provides the ultimate balance of comfort and temperature control through the airflow created by the mattress. Best for: Maximum breathability. If you prefer a responsive or bouncy feel rather than sinking into the bed, a hybrid cooling mattress is your best bet. 3. Latex Mattresses: The Natural Choice Natural latex (derived from rubber tree sap) is one of the highest quality and top-rated cooling mattresses available in New Zealand. The Advantage: The key benefit of latex is that it does not contour by softening with your body heat as memory foam does; therefore, it remains temperature neutral. Most high-quality latex mattresses incorporate pin-core (tiny holes punched through the latex layers), ventilated contour holes, which maximise air passage, thereby providing an outstandingly cool surface for restful sleep. Best for: Eco-conscious shoppers and those who want their bedding materials to be made out of sustainable resources and provide a durable, resilient surface that is thermally neutral. Other Cooling Bedding to Consider Cooling Pillows: Specifically designed to provide airflow and dissipate body heat at the head and neck areas; most contain conductive gels or open-cell memory foam. Cooling Mattress Toppers: An easy way to upgrade your current bed. These cooling mattress toppers allow you to add an immediate layer of climate control to your bed. The materials used in these types of mattress toppers are generally breathable fibers or gel-infused fibers. Cooling Quilts: Forget heavy blankets; these lightweight layers use moisture-wicking bamboo or cotton blends to move heat away from your body. Cooling Pillowcases: These serve as the final touch, using advanced tech-fabrics that remain crisp and cool to the touch all night long. Key Features to Look For: A Buying Guide When browsing online or in a showroom, consider these technical specifications to choose the best mattresses for hot sleepers. Breathable Covers The cover of the mattress is the first point of contact. Look for natural fibers or advanced semi-synthetics: Tencel: A fabric made from wood pulp that is famously better at moisture-wicking than cotton. Bamboo: Naturally antibacterial and cool to the touch. Knitted Fabrics: These offer more stretch and air permeability than tightly woven damask covers. Open-Cell Foam Structure If you are buying a high-quality foam mattress, ensure it is marketed as open-cell. Standard foam cells are closed, like tiny balloons that trap air. Open-cell foam has burst walls, allowing air to move through the material like a sponge. Firmness vs. Heat There is a direct correlation between how deep you sink and how hot you get. A very soft mattress wraps around your body, insulating you and reducing the surface area of your skin exposed to the air. If you are a chronic hot sleeper, a Medium-Firm feel is often superior because it keeps you on top of the mattress rather than in it. Bonus Tips for a Cooler Night’s Sleep Bedding Matters: Even the best cooling mattress will fail if you cover it with heavy polyester sheets. Stick to 100% Cotton, Linen, or Bamboo. These fibers are designed to allow heat to transfer from your body to the cooling layer of your mattress. The Protector Trap: Many waterproof mattress protectors are essentially a sheet of plastic. This creates a vapor barrier that traps heat. Look for protectors labeled as breathable or those using Tencel membranes. NZ Room Environment: Our homes can be humid. Use a ceiling fan to keep air moving, or consider a dehumidifier. Lowering the humidity in the room actually makes your sweat evaporate more efficiently, which is the body's natural cooling mechanism. Memory Foam vs. Pocket Spring: The Ultimate Mattress Buying Guide
Buying a mattress today comes with too many opinions and not enough clarity. From online reviews to sales advice, you’ll often hear strong claims about both memory foam and pocket spring mattresses. While each of these mattress types is made to serve the same purpose, they do so in different ways. The way a mattress provides comfort, support, and feel differs depending on the mattress type. The right choice depends on how each mattress responds to your body, your sleeping position, and even your environment. That’s what truly makes the difference, not the claims around it. What Makes Memory Foam Different? Memory foam can soften with body heat and provide contour to your body. This gives the memory foam its distinctive feel of comfort with a close, cushioned touch. When weight is distributed, the pressure on the shoulders, hips, and lower back is evenly decreased. If you shift your position while sleeping on a memory foam mattress, it will return to its original form gradually. Density plays a key role in performance. High-quality mattresses are generally firmer and more durable, while lower-density foams may feel softer, but may not last as long and retain more heat than higher-density foams. How Pocket Springs Provide Support? Individually wrapped coils are the basis of pocket spring mattresses. Each coil moves freely from one another rather than all together as one. Each coil that has pressure from your body will compress when you lie down. So, the parts of your body that are light, like your shoulders, will get a softer cushion, and the heavier parts of your body, like your hips, will have a firmer platform to rest upon. The overall comfort will be affected by the number of coils, the thickness of the wire, and how the mattress was constructed. Pocket Spring Mattress vs Memory Foam Comparison Pressure Relief and Contouring Memory foam mattresses are commonly recommended for providing excellent support by contouring closely to the shape of your body and distributing your body weight evenly, which reduces back pain and the pressure placed on your body’s shoulders and hips. Therefore, these mattresses work well for people who sleep on their sides or those who suffer from joint discomfort. Pocket spring mattresses, on the other hand, provide more of a responsive “pushback.” They offer support but don’t contour as closely, so pressure relief may be less pronounced unless paired with a soft comfort layer. Support and Spinal Alignment Memory foam mattresses give support by forming to the body shape, which is ideal for lighter-sleeping individuals. But if there is not enough density in the foam, heavier sleepers may sink too much. Pocket springs give support by providing resistance. They may be made with a range of firmness levels across the mattress to help keep heavier individuals aligned properly. Temperature Regulation Due to the density of memory foam, it retains heat, although newer versions can have cooling capabilities. Pocket spring mattresses allow greater air circulation within the mattress, making them the cooler option, especially for hot sleepers or in warm environments. Motion Transfer Memory foam mattresses absorb movement effectively, making them ideal for couples, as motion doesn’t travel across the bed. Compared to traditional spring-type mattresses, pocket springs also reduce motion transfer, but some will still be felt. Durability and Longevity Mattresses with high-density memory foam generally last 8-10 years, while lower-density memory foam has a shorter lifespan. Quality-constructed pocket spring mattresses can have a lifespan of at least 10-15 years, but the comfort layers on top may wear down more quickly than the spring unit they consist of. Pocket Spring vs Memory Foam: Which One Is Better For You? Sleeping Position Side Sleepers: Generally lean toward Memory Foam Mattress. The foam allows the shoulder and hip to sink in, keeping the spine in a straight, neutral line. Back & Stomach Sleepers: Usually benefit from Pocket Springs. These sleepers need the push-back support to prevent the hips from sinking too deeply, which can cause lower back arching and pain. Body Weight Heavier sleepers often find the robust, structural support of steel springs more durable over time. Lighter sleepers may not engage the springs enough and might prefer the immediate responsiveness and cushioning of a foam top. Temperature If you frequently wake up sweaty, the airflow of a Pocket Spring mattress is your best friend. However, if you live in a colder part of the country and love a cozy, warm bed, Memory Foam will help retain that heat. Lifestyle For couples where one person is a restless sleeper, the Queen Foam Mattress is the clear winner for its ability to eliminate motion transfer. How to Test Before You Buy Here’s the tricky bit: lying on a mattress for 5 minutes in a showroom is not the same as sleeping a full night on it. But you can still get a good sense of comfort. Lie in your usual sleep position. If you’re a side sleeper, stay on your side. Check pressure points. Are your hips sinking too much? Do your shoulders feel supported? Roll around. Do you feel stuck, or can you move easily? Bring your partner. This helps you see how much movement transfers across the bed, especially important for light sleepers. The Hybrid Alternative: The Best of Both Worlds Can’t decide? You don’t have to. Hybrid mattresses are available with the best of both pocket spring and memory foam systems, and the disadvantages are minimized in both systems. They have the responsiveness and support of springs combined with the support and comfort of foam, and because hybrid construction provides a cool sleeping surface, most hybrids also provide superior motion control than traditional pocket spring mattresses. That’s why our collection includes mattresses of all types, because the right choice depends on what works best for you. Small Dining Room Ideas: 14 Layouts, Tables and Tricks for Tight NZ Spaces
A small dining room only feels small when the furniture is wrong. Swap a rectangle for a round table, anchor the space with a single pendant, and add one mirror, and a 2.5 by 3 metre nook reads as a proper dining room. Those three moves do more than any paint colour or styling tweak. In New Zealand, dining rooms are rarely dedicated rooms any more. They sit inside an open-plan living zone, share a wall with the kitchen, or fill the end of a corridor in a townhouse. The "small dining room" you are actually designing is usually a 5 to 8 square metre footprint inside a larger space, with tight clearances on at least two sides. This guide covers the layout that works, the best table shape for tight spaces, how many chairs you can actually fit, storage that does not steal floor space, the 2026 trends worth copying, and the mistakes that make a small dining space feel cluttered rather than cosy. What counts as a small dining room A dining area is small when the table occupies more than half the available floor zone, or when the walking space around the table drops below 900 mm on any side. At 900 mm, a seated diner can still get up and walk behind another diner without asking them to move in. At 700 mm, you cannot. That 200 mm difference is the line between a functional small dining room and a cramped one. Most NZ townhouses and apartment living-dining rooms give you a 2.4 to 3 metre wide dining zone. A four-seater round table needs a diameter of 1050 to 1200 mm and a total footprint of around 2.5 metres once chairs are pulled out. Anything smaller than that and you are designing for two, not four. The best layout for a small dining room Four rules cover almost every small dining room layout question. Centre the table under the strongest light source. If you have a pendant, place the table directly beneath it. If you rely on a window, keep the table close enough that daytime light lands on the tabletop. A small dining space that is badly lit always feels smaller than it is. Leave 900 mm of clearance on every side used for seating. Tight clearance is the single biggest reason a dining room feels cramped. If you cannot give 900 mm on all four sides, bias the clearance to the side people actually move through. Push the table closer to the wall on the non-traffic side. Use the wall. A bench seat or banquette against one wall saves 300 to 400 mm compared with dining chairs. In a tight room, that width is the difference between fitting four people and fitting six. Pair a banquette on one side with dining chairs on the other for a layout that reads balanced, not lopsided. Avoid arm chairs. Chairs with arms take up more width, bump into table aprons, and cannot tuck in properly. Armless dining chairs slide fully under the table, clearing the floor path around the room when nobody is seated. Browse dining chairs and filter for armless styles. The best table shape for a small space Every design writer and SERP agrees on this one: round tables win in small dining rooms. The reasons are practical, not aesthetic. No corners mean no corner collisions. A rectangular table with sharp corners in a tight room catches hips, bags and thighs. A round table lets you walk past it without the constant 10 mm dodge. More flexible seating. A 1100 mm round table comfortably seats four, and can stretch to five at a squeeze. A 1200 mm round table seats four with generous elbow room or five comfortably. The same seat count on a rectangular table needs 1400 to 1600 mm of length, which eats more floor space lengthwise. Visually takes up less space. A round table's footprint reads as a single circle. A rectangular table with its orthogonal lines emphasises the length of the room and draws attention to the exact wall you are trying to minimise. Better for conversation. In a small dining room, the whole point is intimacy. Round tables put everyone in eye contact. Rectangular tables create two conversations with an awkward middle. If you need to seat six or more occasionally, a round extending table (also called a butterfly or drop-leaf round) is the compromise. Day-to-day it sits at 1050 mm round. Extended it becomes 1400 mm with an oval footprint. You lose no floor space when you don't need it. For truly tight footprints under 2.4 metres wide, consider a console table that doubles as a two-seater dining surface against a wall, freeing up the rest of the room. The full range of dining tables shows round, extending, square and rectangular options with NZ-appropriate sizes. How many chairs you can actually fit Each diner needs 600 mm of table edge, 700 mm if you want generous elbow room. That sets the maths. Table shape Size Comfortable seats Max at a squeeze --- --- ---: ---: Round 900 mm 3 4 Round 1100 mm 4 5 Round 1200 mm 4 6 Rectangle 1400 × 800 mm 4 6 Rectangle 1600 × 900 mm 6 8 Square 900 × 900 mm 4 4 For two people who occasionally host four, a 1100 mm round or 900 mm square is the sweet spot. For four who host six, go to 1200 mm round or a small extending table. If you routinely need six seats, a small dining room is not the right room and you need to reshape the zone. A matching dining set or table-and-chairs combo often costs less than buying the table and chairs separately, and the scale is guaranteed to work because the combo is designed together. Small dining room ideas on a budget Most "small dining room on a budget" lists push flat-pack furniture that is wrong for the room. The better budget plan is fewer, better pieces. Buy one good round table, not a set. A solid timber 1100 mm round table lasts 20 years. A flat-pack rectangular dining set lasts three. Over a decade the good round costs less per year, and it looks better the whole time. Skip the "dining set" match. Mismatched chairs around a single round table is the current magazine trend, and it costs less than a matched set. Two pairs of chairs in the same silhouette but different colours reads as intentional, not cheap. Use a wall mirror instead of art. A single large mirror opposite the window costs less than a framed art print at the same size and bounces twice the light. In a small dining room, that light payoff is worth more than a gallery wall. Choose one impact light, not three. A single well-chosen pendant above the table does more than three cheap lamps scattered around the room. Shop lamps and lighting for a single-pendant moment. Second-hand chairs, new table. The chairs wear fastest in a small dining room. Buying a new table and sourcing second-hand chairs (reupholstered if needed) is a common budget play that still looks considered. Storage that does not steal floor space The small-dining-room storage problem is real. You need somewhere for plates, linens, glassware and serving pieces, but the room can barely fit the table. The fix is vertical storage against the one wall you can spare. A slim buffet or sideboard is the single most useful piece in a small dining room. A 1200 to 1500 mm buffet along one wall gives you drawers for cutlery, cabinet space for crockery, and a landing zone for serving. Keep it 400 mm deep or less. Anything deeper steals walking space. See the buffets and sideboards range. Wall-mounted shelving above the buffet doubles your display storage without adding floor footprint. One or two floating shelves with plants, a small art piece or favourite crockery adds styling without clutter. Corner cabinets. If your small dining room has a squared-off corner that no dining chair can reach, a tall corner cabinet from our cabinets and bookshelves range uses that dead zone for glassware storage and display. Banquette seating with under-bench storage. If you are building or buying a banquette, specify storage underneath the seat. That hidden cavity becomes the easy home for extra linens, table leaves or seasonal serving ware. Lighting a small dining room Get lighting right and a small dining room stops feeling small. One pendant, centred over the table. The pendant should hang 750 to 900 mm above the tabletop, which means the bottom of the shade sits at roughly 1500 to 1700 mm off the floor. If you do not have a ceiling rose in the right place, an oversized pendant on a long swag cord rerouted to the table centre is the common fix. Warm white only. Use 2700K to 3000K bulbs in dining pendants. Anything cooler feels like a kitchen, not a dining space. Cooler light also makes food look less appetising, which is not the effect you want. Dimmable is not optional. A small dining room needs to pivot between bright for Sunday lunch and dim for dinner parties. A simple dimmer module in the pendant circuit is an inexpensive upgrade. Add one secondary light. A small table lamp on the buffet, or a wall sconce, layers the light and gives you the option to kill the pendant entirely for a moody dinner. Ambient light from the buffet lamp reflecting off a mirror is the small-dining-room equivalent of candlelight. 2026 small dining room trends We pulled the NZ design data from the last twelve months and five trends sit well in tight dining rooms. Warm neutrals over cool greys. Oatmeal, warm beige, soft clay and honeyed oak replace the cool grey-washed finishes of 2020-2024. Warm palettes make a small room feel cosy rather than clinical. Mix-and-match seating. Matched chair sets read dated. Two styles of chair at the same table, unified by colour or material, is the look that reads contemporary. One easy version: two upholstered dining chairs at the head seats, two timber chairs along the sides. Multi-use layouts. A dining table that doubles as a work-from-home desk, a homework station, or a kids craft table. The trend favours wipe-clean surfaces, round shapes that do not require a "head" seat, and furniture proportions that look right whether the table is set for dinner or cleared for work. Statement pendant lighting. A single oversized pendant over a small dining table is the 2026 styling choice that adds the most impact for the money. Look for sculptural paper, rattan or warm metal finishes. Sustainable, long-lasting materials. Solid timber, natural fibres, ceramic and glass replace fast-furniture laminates. In a small dining room where every piece is visible, material quality reads even stronger than in a large one. How to make a small dining room feel larger These are the design principles that actually move the needle, regardless of trend. Keep the floor visible. The more floor you can see, the larger the room reads. Choose chairs with slim legs over chunky blocks. Skip the rug unless it is big enough to anchor the whole table plus 600 mm on each side. Light walls, medium floor, dark accent. The old "paint it all white" rule is outdated. Light walls bounce light. A medium-tone floor grounds the space. One dark accent, like a deep-tone buffet or a dark table, gives the eye something to land on and makes the light elements read lighter by contrast. Vertical lines over horizontal. Tall narrow shelving, vertical panelling and upright art draw the eye up and make a low room feel taller. Horizontal stripes do the opposite. Symmetry helps. Small rooms forgive asymmetry less than large ones. A centred pendant, a buffet positioned centrally on a wall, and a table that aligns with the window creates visual calm. Calm reads as space. Repetition not variety. One material palette repeated across table, chairs, buffet and floor reads as coherent. Four different materials in the same small room reads as chaos. Open-plan living-dining combinations Most NZ small dining rooms are actually the dining end of a living-dining or kitchen-dining room. The rules change slightly. Define the zone with a rug, a light or the furniture. You do not need walls. A rug under the table plus a pendant overhead is enough to say "this is dining, that is living". Align the dining zone with the sofa, not against it. Running a dining table perpendicular to the main sofa axis avoids the visual pile-up of two seating zones facing each other. Pick furniture that reads across zones. A buffet in the dining end should feel related to the media unit in the living end. Matching timber tones or matching leg silhouettes is enough. Let the kitchen island double up. If the dining room backs onto the kitchen, bar stools at the island can handle casual meals, reducing the pressure on the small dining table to seat every meal. Common small dining room mistakes A few specific errors shrink a small dining room or make it feel awkward. Rectangular table with sharp corners. Every small-dining design rule says go round. The exception is a narrow console-style dining table against a wall. Too-small rug. A rug that does not extend 600 mm past the chairs when pulled out looks like a postage stamp. Either go big or go rugless. Matched dining set. Full-match dining sets read dated. One statement table plus chairs chosen for the room reads contemporary. Under-lit corners. A small dining room with one pendant and nothing else feels cave-like after sunset. Add a secondary light source. Fake flowers in the centrepiece. Skip them. One real plant, a simple vase with a single stem, or nothing at all beats a fussy fake arrangement every time. Buffet too deep. A 500 mm deep buffet in a tight room steals walking space. 350 to 400 mm deep is the small-room spec. Quick-win action list for a small dining room If you want to lift a small dining room today without a full refurnish, do these in order. Move the table so it is centred under the main light source. Swap bulbs in the pendant to 2700K warm white, dimmable. Remove all fake-floral centrepieces and any styling above half the table height. Check the clearance to every wall. If one side is under 700 mm, shift the table toward a more generous side. Add one wall mirror opposite the window or the pendant. Replace any armchair dining chairs with armless. Only then decide whether you need a new table. That order matters. Most small-dining-room problems are layout and lighting problems first, furniture problems second. Furniture is the expensive move. Save it for last. Frequently asked questions What type of dining table is best for a small space? A round dining table between 1050 and 1200 mm in diameter. Round tables have no corners to catch hips, they seat flexibly from three to five people, and they read as a smaller visual footprint than a rectangular table at the same seating capacity. How do I layout a small dining room? Centre the table under the main light source, leave 900 mm of clearance on every side used for walking, and bias the table toward the wall on the non-traffic side. Use a banquette or bench against one wall to save 300 to 400 mm versus dining chairs. How can I make a small dining room feel larger? Keep the floor visible with slim-legged chairs, paint the walls in warm light tones, add one mirror opposite the light source, and stick to a single repeated material palette. Centred pendants and symmetrical buffet placement make a small room read as calm and spacious. What are the 2026 dining room trends? Warm neutrals and honeyed timber over cool greys, mix-and-match seating, multi-use layouts, statement pendant lighting and sustainable long-lasting materials. All five suit small NZ dining rooms where every piece is on show. How many people can I fit at a 1200 mm round dining table? Four comfortably with generous elbow room, five at a normal place setting, six at a squeeze. A 1200 mm round table is the sweet spot for a household of four that hosts six occasionally. Small Bedroom Ideas: 15 Ways to Make a Compact NZ Bedroom Feel Bigger
If your bedroom is under 10 square metres, you do not have a layout problem. You have a priority problem. The best small bedroom ideas come from making every piece of furniture earn its floor space, and every vertical metre work for storage. In New Zealand, a typical second bedroom in a townhouse or apartment runs 2.4 to 3 metres wide and 2.7 to 3.5 metres long. That gives you roughly 7 to 10 square metres to fit a bed, clothes, bedside surfaces, and somewhere to actually stand up and get dressed. This guide is built for those rooms. No glossy 30 square metre "small bedrooms" pretending to be tight. Real NZ sizes, real layouts, and real furniture you can buy. We'll cover the best bed layout for compact rooms, the storage pieces that pull double duty, how to make a small bedroom look expensive without a renovation, the 2026 trends worth following, and the mistakes that make a room feel smaller than it is. What counts as a small bedroom in New Zealand The New Zealand Building Code does not set a minimum bedroom size, but it does require that a habitable room allow enough space for a bed and basic furniture. Most apartments and newer townhouses are built with secondary bedrooms between 7 and 11 square metres. A master bedroom in the same home often sits at 12 to 15 square metres, which is still "small" by the standards of a rural villa. A bedroom feels small when the bed takes up more than half the floor area, or when the walking path between the door and the bed is under 600 mm. If you are bumping knees on the bed frame on your way to the wardrobe, the room is too tight. These ideas will fix that. The best layout for a small bedroom The answer to "what is the best layout for a small bedroom" is almost always the same, once you accept the constraints. Push the bed against the longest wall. In a room where the length is greater than the width, the bed sits long-side along the longest wall. This leaves the clearest walking path at the foot of the bed. In a room that is closer to square, centre the bed on the wall opposite the door so you walk into the room and see the headboard. Leave 600 mm minimum on one side of the bed for getting in and out. If you share the bed, aim for 600 mm on both sides. Anything tighter and the bed feels wedged in. Put vertical storage on the wall behind the bed or opposite it, never between the door and the bed. Tall furniture in the walking path makes a small room feel like a hallway full of obstacles. Keep the space under the window clear. Low furniture under a window works. Tall furniture blocks light, which makes the whole room feel smaller. If a wardrobe has to go under a window, choose one with a shallow profile and a pale finish. A queen bed in a room under 9 square metres is a stretch but it is possible. A king is not. If you are buying new, a double or queen in the right frame will give you a better room than a king with no room to walk. Browse options in beds and bed frames before you commit. Space-saving furniture that actually works There are a lot of "space-saving" products that save no space at all. These five actually do. 1. Storage beds and ottoman beds A bed with drawers in the base or a gas-lift ottoman mechanism turns the largest piece of furniture in the room into your biggest storage zone. The trade-off is price and the effort of lifting the mattress, but for a room with no built-in wardrobe it is transformative. Look at bed frames with storage and shortlist anything with four deep drawers or a full lift base. 2. Wall-mounted bedside shelves Traditional bedside tables take up 450 to 500 mm of floor space per side. A wall-mounted shelf or a floating drawer unit at mattress height gives you the same surface area for a lamp and a book, with the floor underneath clear. That clear floor reads as space. 3. Slim, tall drawer units If your wardrobe is small or non-existent, a 400 mm to 500 mm deep chest of drawers with four or five drawers gives you more clothes storage per square metre than a short, wide unit. Tall furniture takes your eye up and makes the ceiling read as higher. See our drawers and dressers or tallboys for shallow-depth options. 4. Sliding door wardrobes A hinged wardrobe door needs 600 to 800 mm of clear swing in front of it. A sliding door wardrobe needs zero. In a small bedroom, sliders are almost always the better call, especially mirrored sliders that bounce light back into the room. Sliding wardrobe ideas for small bedrooms are one of the fastest rising searches in NZ right now, and for good reason. Browse wardrobes for sliding-door and mirrored options. 5. Bench seats or storage trunks at the foot of the bed A low bench or ottoman trunk at the foot of the bed gives you a place to sit while getting dressed, a spot for extra blankets, and a surface to lay out tomorrow's clothes. It does all of that in the wasted 400 mm of floor at the end of the mattress. How to make a small bedroom look expensive Making a small bedroom look high end is not about spending more. It is about removing cheap-looking clutter and getting three things right. Consistent wood tones. A small room with mixed oak, walnut, pine and painted white furniture looks busy. Pick one wood tone and stick with it across the bed, bedside, and drawers. Warmer tones read more expensive than cold grey-wash finishes. One statement textile. A heavy throw in a single tactile fabric, like boucle, teddy fleece or a chunky knit, folded across the bed is the cheapest trick to lift a small bedroom. Layer in a set of linen or cotton-percale sheets in a muted tone and you are most of the way there. Proper lighting. Overhead ceiling lights flatten a small room. A single warm bedside table lamp or wall sconce changes the whole feel. Use a 2700K warm white bulb, never a cool white. Cool white makes a small bedroom feel like a motel. Polished mirrors help too. A full-length leaner or a wall-mounted mirror opposite the window doubles the apparent light in the room. If the wall space is there, a mirror is the highest-return styling piece you can add to a small bedroom. Storage ideas that do not shrink the room The mistake with small bedroom storage is adding more furniture. The fix is usually to add more storage without adding more floor pieces. Go vertical. A tall, narrow bookshelf or wardrobe uses the same square metres of floor as a short wide one but stores twice as much. Ceilings in most NZ homes are 2.4 metres, so a 2.1 to 2.3 metre unit looks deliberate, not out of scale. Use the bed base. If you are not ready to buy a storage bed, raise your existing bed on bed risers and use slim under-bed drawers or fabric boxes. Flat storage boxes that are 150 mm tall and roll on casters are the best use of that dead space. Hang behind doors. Over-door hooks and slim fabric organisers give you another 800 mm of vertical storage for shoes, bags or accessories without touching the floor. Edit ruthlessly. The biggest storage upgrade in any small bedroom is removing the clothes, bedding and decor you do not actually use. Every piece that stays has to justify its place. Small bedroom ideas for couples Sharing a small bedroom adds constraints. You need two bedside surfaces, two sides to get out of the bed, and enough storage for two people's clothes. A few specific changes help. Matching wall-mounted lamps. Drop the bedside table lamps and mount reading lights or sconces on the wall above each pillow. That frees both bedside tables for smaller surfaces, or lets you use slim floating shelves instead. Shared low bench instead of two bedside tables. A long low bench that runs the full width of the bed, with two lamps on top, can replace two bedside tables. It reads as a single deliberate piece rather than two small mismatched ones. Side-by-side drawer towers. Two identical slim drawer units, one for each person, stacked next to each other against a wall, give you his-and-hers storage without fighting over a chest of drawers. A king-split mattress on a queen frame. If you both want different firmness but the room will not fit a king, two single mattresses zipped together on a queen frame can work. Small bedroom ideas for kids and teens Kids' bedrooms in NZ homes are often the smallest room in the house. The priorities are slightly different. You need floor space for play, vertical storage for toys and books, and a bed that grows with the child. A loft bed for children over six turns the space under the bed into a desk zone or a reading nook. A trundle bed hides a second mattress for sleepovers without taking permanent floor space. Low, open cube storage lets a child put their own things away, which a tall wardrobe will not. For a teen, a standard single or king single bed against the wall with a wall-mounted desk on the opposite side gives them somewhere to study without committing a second piece of floor furniture. Colour, pattern and light The old rule that small rooms must be painted white is half right. White walls reflect the most light, but a small room painted pure white with white furniture feels flat and clinical. The better rule is to keep your walls light and your accents warm. Warm off-whites and muted earth tones are more forgiving than stark white. A soft oatmeal, a warm limewash grey, or a pale sage reflect light without feeling cold. One darker wall can work if the room gets good natural light. A dark accent behind the bed makes the bed feel like a deliberate focal point, not a space-filler. Keep the other three walls pale. Pattern in small doses. A patterned rug or a single patterned cushion adds interest without closing the room in. A feature wallpaper on every wall in a small bedroom rarely works. Layer the light. Overhead + bedside + one accent source. A floor lamp in a corner, a table lamp on the bedside, and the ceiling light give you the option to run softer evening light without a dim room. 2026 NZ bedroom trends worth copying We pulled Google Trends data for NZ bedroom searches in the last twelve months and a few clear patterns emerged. Sliding wardrobe designs for small bedrooms is a breakout search in NZ right now. If your small bedroom does not already have sliding doors, this is the highest-impact upgrade on the list. Fitted wardrobes are trending up as NZ homeowners look for storage that fills the full height of the wall. If you cannot commit to a built-in, a tall freestanding wardrobe with a matching filler cabinet above it looks close to the fitted look. Warm textural bedding in boucle, teddy and chunky knits is replacing the flat hotel-style white bedding that dominated small-bedroom photography for the last five years. Texture adds depth that a small room needs. Japandi styling, the crossover between Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism, continues to suit small NZ bedrooms because it demands discipline about furniture count. A Japandi small bedroom is a small bedroom with less in it. Warm wood returns over grey oak. Softer honey and walnut tones are replacing the cool grey-oak finishes that dominated 2020 to 2024. In a small room, warm wood reads cosier and more expensive. Common small bedroom mistakes to avoid A few specific errors turn an already small room into a room that feels even smaller. Oversized furniture. A king bed in a room that can barely fit a queen will always feel wrong. Measure the room and the furniture twice before buying. Too many bedside accessories. A lamp, a book, a glass of water. That is enough. Phone chargers in drawers, not on top. Blocking the window with tall furniture. Light into the room is your biggest asset. Do not trade it for storage. Dark, heavy curtains. Light, lined curtains in a warm neutral let more light in during the day. Use blockout behind them if you need it at night. Cheap, fast-furniture bed frames that wobble. A small bedroom is mostly bed. A bed that looks and feels flimsy makes the whole room feel cheap. A well-made frame in a solid timber or a clean upholstered finish is the single most important purchase for a small bedroom. Shop the full range of bed frames and compare solid-timber and upholstered options. Skipping a rug. A rug under the bed, extending 500 to 600 mm on the exposed sides, gives the room a defined floor and softens acoustics. Without one, a small bedroom can feel echoey and half-finished. How to start styling a small bedroom today If you want to see an immediate difference in a small bedroom without buying new furniture, do these six things in order. Clear everything off every flat surface. Move the bed if the layout above suggests a better position. Swap cool-white bulbs for warm 2700K bulbs in every bedside and ceiling fixture. Add one heavy textured throw folded across the foot of the bed. Put a mirror on the wall opposite the window. Only then decide what to buy. That order matters. Most small-bedroom problems are styling and layout problems before they are furniture problems. Furniture is the last step, not the first. If after those six steps the room still feels tight, the furniture is the issue. That is when a storage bed, a sliding wardrobe, or a taller chest of drawers is worth the spend. Everything on TSB Living is sized for NZ rooms and shipped nationwide, so browse our bedroom collection once you know exactly what the room needs. Frequently asked questions What is the best layout for a small bedroom? Place the bed along the longest wall or centred on the wall opposite the door, leaving at least 600 mm of clear floor on the side you get out of bed. Put tall furniture on the wall behind or opposite the bed, never in the walking path from the door. How can I make my small bedroom look bigger? Use warm off-white walls, tall narrow storage instead of short wide, a mirror opposite the window, and clear flat surfaces. Small bedrooms look bigger when there is less on display, not when there is more. How do I make a small bedroom look expensive? Stick to one wood tone, layer in one tactile throw or heavy knit, and switch to warm 2700K lighting with at least two light sources. Proper bedding in natural fibres like linen or cotton-percale lifts a small room more than any single piece of furniture. What are the NZ bedroom trends for 2026? Sliding wardrobes for small bedrooms, fitted-look wardrobes, warm honey-wood furniture, textured bedding in boucle and chunky knits, and Japandi styling that keeps furniture count low. All four are well-suited to tight NZ bedrooms. Can I fit a queen bed in a small bedroom? Usually yes, if the room is at least 2.7 metres wide. You need 1530 mm for the mattress plus at least 600 mm on one side to get in and out. Measure the room first and do not buy a king unless you have 3 metres of width to spare. Sideboard vs Buffet Table: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?
If you've ever searched for dining room storage and found yourself confused by the terms "sideboard," "buffet," "buffet table," "credenza," and "console," you're not alone. These words get used interchangeably by furniture retailers, interior designers, and even manufacturers. The result is that nobody quite knows what they're actually shopping for. The good news is that the differences are smaller than you'd think, and what matters more than the name is how the piece fits your space, your storage needs, and your style. This guide clears up the confusion and helps you pick the right one. What's the Actual Difference? In traditional furniture terms, sideboards and buffet tables are closely related but have a few subtle distinctions. A sideboard is typically a low, wide storage piece with a combination of drawers and cabinets behind doors. It usually sits at about waist height (80 to 90cm tall) and is designed to sit against a dining room or living room wall. Sideboards tend to have a sleeker, more streamlined look and are often used as much for display as for storage. A buffet table (sometimes just called a buffet) serves a similar function but historically was designed specifically for the dining room. Traditional buffets were taller, sometimes with a hutch or shelving unit on top. Modern buffet tables have largely dropped the hutch and now look very similar to sideboards. The main practical difference today is that buffet tables are more commonly associated with dining room use and food service, while sideboards are used in both dining and living spaces. A credenza is the more office-oriented cousin. It's similar in shape to a sideboard but traditionally used behind a desk for files and equipment. In practice, if you're shopping for a piece of furniture to provide storage, display space, and surface area in your dining room or living room, any of these terms will lead you to what you need. Don't get hung up on the name. Focus on the size, storage layout, and style. Where Does a Sideboard or Buffet Table Work Best? These pieces are more versatile than most people realise. Here's where they add the most value. In the dining room is the classic placement. A sideboard or buffet table next to your dining table gives you somewhere to store tableware, linen, candles, and serving dishes. When you're hosting, the top surface becomes a serving station for food and drinks, which takes pressure off the dining table itself. This is particularly useful for buffet-style meals where guests serve themselves. In the living room is where sideboards really shine. Placed behind a sofa or along a feature wall, a sideboard provides storage for everything from board games and photo albums to throw blankets and spare cushions. The top surface is perfect for lamps, plants, framed photos, or a curated display that gives your living room personality. In a hallway or entryway, a narrower sideboard creates a landing zone for keys, mail, and bags. It's a practical addition that also makes your entrance feel more intentional and welcoming. In a bedroom, a sideboard can replace a traditional chest of drawers for someone who prefers a wider, lower silhouette. It works particularly well in larger bedrooms where a standard tallboy might look too narrow and tall. How to Choose the Right Size Size is the most common mistake people make with sideboards and buffet tables. Too small and it looks lost against the wall. Too large and it overwhelms the room and blocks walkways. Measure the wall space first. The sideboard should be no wider than about two-thirds of the wall it sits against. This keeps the proportions balanced. A 100cm sideboard on a 4-metre wall will look out of place. A 150cm to 180cm piece on that same wall will look intentional and grounded. Check the depth. Most sideboards are between 35cm and 45cm deep. In a dining room with a table and chairs, make sure you have at least 90cm of clearance between the back of the dining chairs and the front of the sideboard. In a hallway, look for narrower options so you don't block the walkway. Think about height. Standard sideboard height is around 80 to 90cm, which is ideal for dining room use because it's the right height to serve from while standing. If you're placing it in a living room behind a sofa, make sure it's taller than the sofa back so it's visible and functional. What's Available at TSB Living TSB Living stocks a range of sideboards and buffet tables across different styles and sizes. Here's a breakdown to help you narrow down what suits your space. The Glansig Range (White, Modern, LED Options) The Glansig range is TSB Living's most extensive buffet and sideboard collection. If you want a clean, modern look with high-gloss white finishes, this is where to start. The Glansig White Buffet Table (180cm) is the largest in the range and suits bigger dining rooms or open-plan living areas. It provides generous storage and a long surface for serving or display. The Glansig White 3-Door Buffet with LED Light (152cm) and the Glansig White 2-Door Buffet with LED Light (107cm) add built-in LED lighting that creates ambient warmth during evening dinners. The LED feature is worth considering if your dining area doesn't get a lot of natural light or if you entertain in the evenings often. The Glansig White Buffet Table (150cm) is a mid-size option without LED for those who want the clean Glansig look at a simpler price point. If you want a coordinated look across your living and dining areas, the Glansig range also includes matching entertainment units and bedside tables, so you can carry the same design language through multiple rooms. The Tambour Range (Marama and Ayla) For a warmer, more textured look, the tambour-style sideboards have a distinctive ribbed front that adds visual interest without being over the top. The Marama Tambour Buffet Table (140cm) is a beautiful mid-sized option that pairs well with wooden dining tables. The Marama range also includes a matching coffee table and entertainment units in 120cm and 160cm, making it easy to create a coordinated living/dining space. The Ayla Tambour Sideboard (100cm) is more compact and works well in smaller dining rooms, hallways, or bedrooms where a full-sized buffet would be too much. It also has a matching entertainment unit (140cm). The Anshos Range (LED, Contemporary) The Anshos Buffet with LED Light (108cm) in white is a compact option that suits apartments and smaller dining areas. The LED lighting adds a modern touch. It's also available in white/grey for a two-tone look. The Anshos range extends to a sideboard with LED light (135cm) and side cabinet for additional matching storage options. The Lennart Range (Scandi, Natural) For a Scandinavian-inspired look, the Lennart Sideboard (120cm) has a clean, natural wood aesthetic that works in both modern and traditional homes. The Lennart range is one of TSB Living's most comprehensive collections, with matching coffee tables, end tables, entertainment units, and even a sideboard and shoe cabinet bundle. If you like to coordinate furniture across rooms, Lennart makes it easy. The Olveston Range (Warm, Contemporary) The Olveston Sideboard (155cm) has a warm, contemporary feel with clean lines. Like the other ranges, it has matching pieces including an entertainment unit (200cm), coffee table, and tallboy, so you can build a coordinated look across your living and dining spaces. The Bojd Range (Compact, Warm) For truly compact spaces, the Bojd Sideboard (80cm) is the smallest option in the range. It suits hallways, bedrooms, or small apartments where every centimetre counts. There's a matching side table for a coordinated look. How to Style Your Sideboard or Buffet Table Once you've chosen the right piece, styling the top surface is what makes it feel like a deliberate design choice rather than just a storage unit pushed against the wall. The rule of odd numbers applies here just like it does with coffee table styling. Group items in threes or fives rather than pairs. A lamp, a plant, and a stack of books. A vase, a candle, and a framed photo. Odd groupings look more natural and intentional. Vary the height of items on top. If everything is the same height, the display looks flat and boring. Mix tall items (a lamp, a vase with stems) with medium items (a framed photo, a candle) and low items (a small plant, a decorative bowl). Leave some breathing room. Don't cover every centimetre of the surface. Leaving about 30% of the top surface empty keeps the display looking curated rather than cluttered. Use the surface practically during events. When you're hosting dinner, clear the decorative items and use the sideboard as a serving station. Stack plates at one end, food in the middle, and drinks at the other. This is what buffet tables were originally designed for, and it works brilliantly. Quick Reference: Which One Should You Buy? You want a large statement piece for a big dining room: Glansig 180cm Buffet Table or Olveston 155cm Sideboard. You want LED ambience for evening entertaining: Glansig 152cm 3-Door Buffet with LED or Anshos 108cm Buffet with LED. 10 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Furniture
We all get attached to our furniture. That sofa has been through movie marathons, sick days, and every Christmas since you moved in. The dining table has hosted birthday cakes, homework sessions, and more than a few wine-fuelled dinner parties. But there comes a point when holding onto old furniture stops being sentimental and starts affecting your comfort, your health, and how your home looks and feels. The tricky part is knowing when you've crossed that line. Most people wait far too long to replace furniture because the decline happens gradually. You don't notice the sofa sagging until a guest sits in it and practically disappears. You don't realise the mattress is wrecked until you sleep at a hotel and suddenly feel ten years younger. Here are ten honest signs that it's time to let go and upgrade. 1. You Wake Up Stiff or Sore If you're waking up with back pain, neck stiffness, or aching joints that ease off during the day, your mattress is the most likely culprit. Mattresses lose their support over time as the springs weaken and the foam compresses. Most mattresses have a functional lifespan of about 7 to 10 years, but cheaper ones can start deteriorating in as little as 3 to 5 years. The same applies to your pillows. If you've had the same pillow for more than two years, it's probably not doing its job anymore. Waking up sore isn't just uncomfortable. It affects your energy, your mood, and your productivity for the entire day. A good mattress is one of the best investments you can make in your health. Browse TSB Living's mattress range to compare options. 2. Your Sofa Has a "Favourite Spot" Dip If there's one seat on your sofa that sags noticeably lower than the rest, the foam and springs underneath have permanently compressed. No amount of flipping cushions will fix this. Once the internal support structure breaks down, it doesn't come back. A sagging sofa isn't just uncomfortable. It puts your spine in an unnatural position that can contribute to back and hip problems over time. If you find yourself constantly shifting, stacking cushions for extra support, or avoiding certain seats, the sofa has reached the end of its useful life. If the frame itself is still solid and only the cushions are the issue, replacing just the cushions can buy you a couple more years. But if the frame creaks, wobbles, or feels unstable when you sit down, it's time for a new sofa. Check out TSB Living's full sofa collection for options ranging from compact two-seaters to NZ-made corner sofas. 3. You Can See or Feel the Springs This applies to mattresses, sofas, and armchairs. If you can feel individual springs through the upholstery, or if sitting down produces a metallic creak, the internal support has failed. This is beyond the point of repair for most furniture and is a clear signal to replace. 4. It Wobbles, Creaks, or Feels Unstable A dining chair that wobbles. A bed frame that creaks every time you move. A desk that shifts when you type. These aren't just annoying. They're signs that joints and structural connections have loosened or broken. For some pieces, a bit of wood glue and tightening a few screws can fix the problem. But if the wobble persists after a repair attempt, or if you notice cracks in the frame, the furniture has become a safety issue. This is especially important for anything children climb on, like bunk beds, high chairs, and dining chairs. TSB Living stocks a wide range of bed frames and dining chairs if a replacement is overdue. 5. The Fabric Is Stained, Torn, or Permanently Discoloured Surface damage like stains and fading doesn't affect how furniture works, but it has a big impact on how your home looks and how you feel in it. We underestimate how much tired, stained furniture drags down the energy of a room. Small stains on a sofa can sometimes be cleaned professionally. But if the fabric is thinning, the colour has faded unevenly from sun exposure, or there are tears in high-wear areas like armrests and seat edges, cleaning won't fix it. For sofas where the frame and cushions are still in good shape but the fabric looks rough, a stretch sofa cover can extend its life for another year or two at a fraction of the replacement cost. But this is a bridge solution, not a permanent fix. 6. It Smells and You Can't Figure Out Why Old furniture absorbs odours over the years. Pet smells, cooking odours, smoke, sweat, and spills all accumulate deep in upholstery, foam, and fabric. If a piece of furniture has a persistent smell that doesn't go away after cleaning, the odour is embedded in the padding or frame itself. This is common with mattresses, sofas, and fabric armchairs. It can also happen with wooden furniture in damp environments where mould develops inside drawers or behind panels. If professional cleaning doesn't solve the smell, it's time to replace the piece. No amount of air freshener will fix furniture that has absorbed years of odours. 7. Your Lifestyle Has Changed This is the sign most people overlook. Furniture that was right for your previous life stage might not suit where you are now. That glass coffee table was fine when it was just the two of you. Now you have a toddler and it's a safety hazard. The two-seater sofa worked in your first flat, but it's too small for a family home. The flimsy desk was okay for occasional laptop use, but now you work from home full-time and need something ergonomic. Moving house, having kids, starting to work from home, downsizing after the kids leave, or simply getting older and wanting more comfort are all valid reasons to replace furniture that still technically "works" but no longer fits your life. Browse office furniture for ergonomic home office setups, or coffee tables for family-friendly alternatives. 8. It Doesn't Fit the Room Anymore A dining table that's too big for your new house. An entertainment unit that dwarfs the TV. A bed frame that leaves no room to walk around the bedroom. Scale matters, and furniture that's the wrong size for a room makes the entire space feel uncomfortable. If you've moved recently and brought all your old furniture with you, take a critical look at whether each piece actually suits the new space. Sometimes selling or donating a piece that's too large and buying something more appropriately sized transforms a room that felt cramped into one that feels open and comfortable. 9. Drawers Stick, Doors Won't Close, or Hardware Is Broken Functional issues like sticky drawers, broken handles, misaligned doors, and damaged hinges make furniture frustrating to use every single day. For newer pieces, replacement hardware is usually easy to find and fit. But for older furniture where the wood has warped or swollen, the issue is structural and replacement parts won't help. If you're fighting with a piece of furniture every time you use it, that daily frustration is reason enough to replace it. Life is too short for a bedside table drawer that requires a two-hand technique to open. Check out bedside tables, tallboys and dressers, and sideboards for storage furniture that actually works. 10. You've Stopped Inviting People Over This is the sign that surprises most people, but it's often the most telling. If you feel slightly embarrassed about how your living room or dining area looks, or if you find yourself making excuses to meet friends at restaurants instead of hosting at home, your furniture might be the reason. Your home should be somewhere you're proud to invite people into. If a tired sofa, a scuffed dining table, or a cluttered living room is holding you back from entertaining, replacing even one or two key pieces can completely change how you feel about your space. You Don't Have to Replace Everything at Once If several of these signs hit home, don't feel like you need to replace your entire house in one go. Prioritise based on what affects your daily life the most. Replace first: Your mattress (if you're waking up sore) and your sofa (if it's sagging or uncomfortable). These are the two pieces of furniture you use the most, and upgrading them has the biggest impact on your day-to-day comfort. Replace second: Your dining table and chairs if they're wobbling, stained, or too big or small for your space. This is the furniture your family gathers around and guests see first. Replace when you can: Bedroom storage (bedside tables, tallboys), office furniture, and decorative pieces. These are important, but they don't affect comfort and usability as directly. With Afterpay and Zip available at TSB Living, you can spread the cost of replacing furniture over time rather than paying for everything upfront. Browse the full range at TSB Living. You want a warm, textured look with matching pieces: Marama 140cm Tambour Buffet Table or Lennart 120cm Sideboard. You have a compact space or hallway: Ayla 100cm Tambour Sideboard, Bojd 80cm Sideboard, or Anshos 108cm Buffet. You want to coordinate across multiple rooms: Lennart, Glansig, Marama, or Olveston ranges all have matching entertainment units, coffee tables, and storage pieces. The Ultimate Sofa Buying Guide for Kiwi Homes
Your sofa is probably the most-used piece of furniture in your home. It's where you watch TV, read, nap, entertain, and spend time with family. It's also one of the biggest purchases you'll make when furnishing a living room. Getting it right means years of comfort. Getting it wrong means sitting on something you quietly resent every evening. This guide covers everything you need to think about before buying a sofa in New Zealand, from choosing the right size and shape to picking the best material for your lifestyle. What Type of Sofa Do You Need? The first decision is choosing a sofa shape that fits your space and how you use it. Here are the main types and who they suit best. Corner Sofas and Sectionals Corner sofas are the most popular choice for New Zealand living rooms, and for good reason. They maximise seating in a single piece of furniture, define the layout of your room, and give you that "sink in" feeling that smaller sofas can't match. If you want something built to last and made right here in New Zealand, the NZ-made range is worth a close look. The NZ Made Andy Corner Sofa with Ottoman comes in multiple fabric options including Kido Marble, Vish Grey, Vish Black, Comfy Silver, and Kido Black. Having this many fabric choices means you can match the sofa to your existing decor rather than redesigning your room around it. The NZ Made Lavern Corner Sofa is another locally made option with a slightly different profile. It's available in Kido Marble, Kido Black, Comfy Silver, and Vish Grey. The NZ Made Kareena Corner Sofa offers yet another silhouette if you're after something different. For a larger living room, the NZ Made Bhumi Corner Sofa with Ottoman is generous in size and comes in the same fabric range: Kido Steel, Comfy Silver, and Vish Grey. The NZ Made Ezra Corner Sofa features geometric cushions for a more contemporary look. If you're working with a tighter budget, the Marcia Sectional Sofa with Left Chaise in linen grey or linen black gives you the sectional layout at a lower price point. The Northland Linen Sofa with Ottoman in grey or black is another affordable option with a clean, modern design. Sofa Sets (3+2+1) If you prefer individual pieces rather than one large sectional, a sofa set gives you flexibility. You can arrange a three-seater, two-seater, and armchair in different configurations, move pieces to other rooms, or replace one piece without buying a whole new set. The NZ Made Chika 3+2+1 Sofa Set is a standout option. It's locally made and available in Kido Steel and Kido Black. For a PU leather look, the Zonny 3-Piece Sofa Set comes in beige, taupe, and black. PU leather is easy to wipe clean, which makes it a practical choice for families with young children or pets. Smaller Sofas and Accent Pieces Not every room needs a large sofa. Smaller living spaces, bedrooms, reading nooks, or home offices often work better with a compact two or three-seater. The Gyllene 2-Seater Velvet Sofa or 3-Seater in black velvet adds a luxurious touch to smaller spaces. The Loretta PU Leather Sofa in orange or grey makes a bold statement in a smaller room. The Loriece Corner Sofa with Ottoman in PU black or brown is a compact corner option for rooms where a full-sized sectional would be too large. Fabric vs PU Leather: Which Should You Choose? Material is one of the most important decisions, and it depends on your lifestyle more than your taste. Linen and fabric sofas feel soft and breathable. They're comfortable in all seasons and come in a wide range of textures and colours. The Robyn Linen Sofa Set with Ottoman in dark grey or black is a good example of how linen creates a warm, inviting look. The downside is that fabric can stain more easily and may need more regular cleaning. PU leather sofas are easier to maintain and wipe clean. They suit homes with kids, pets, or anyone who doesn't want to worry about spills. The Moser PU Leather Sofa with Ottoman in brown has a classic look that ages well. PU leather can feel warmer in summer and cooler in winter compared to fabric, so consider your climate and whether your living room gets a lot of direct sun. Velvet sofas like the Gyllene range add texture and richness. They work best in formal living rooms, bedrooms, or spaces that don't get heavy daily use. Velvet does require more careful maintenance but the visual payoff is significant. How to Choose the Right Size Measuring your room before you shop is essential. A sofa that looks perfect in a showroom can overwhelm a smaller living room or look lost in a larger one. Start by measuring the wall or area where the sofa will sit. Leave at least 45cm between the sofa and any coffee table for comfortable legroom. Make sure there's enough space to walk around the sofa without squeezing past. For a standard New Zealand living room (around 4m x 5m), a three-seater sofa or a compact corner sofa will usually fit well. Larger open-plan spaces can handle a generous sectional like the Bhumi or a full 3+2+1 set. Don't forget to measure your doorways, hallways, and stairwells. The most common mistake people make is buying a sofa that won't physically fit through the front door. Check the sofa's dimensions against every opening it needs to pass through on delivery day. Why NZ-Made Matters TSB Living stocks a range of NZ-made sofas including the Andy, Lavern, Kareena, Bhumi, Chika, and Ezra. Choosing NZ-made furniture has some real advantages. Lead times are typically shorter because the furniture doesn't need to ship from overseas. Quality control is more consistent when manufacturing is local. You're supporting New Zealand jobs and businesses. And if something goes wrong, dealing with a local manufacturer is far simpler than trying to resolve an issue with an overseas factory. The NZ-made range at TSB Living uses quality fabrics and solid construction, and the variety of fabric options means you're not limited to one or two colours. Protect Your Investment A good sofa should last years, but a little protection goes a long way. If you have pets or young kids, a Stretch Sofa Cover protects the upholstery from spills, pet hair, and general wear. They're easy to remove and wash, and they're far cheaper than reupholstering. Pair your sofa with the right accessories to complete your living room. A Bellay Linen Ottoman Bench in dark grey, light grey, or brown adds extra seating and doubles as a coffee table with a tray on top. An accent chair like the Pirie Velvet Accent Chair in dark green creates a reading corner next to your main sofa. Ready to Find Your Perfect Sofa? The right sofa makes your living room feel complete. Take the time to measure your space, think about how you actually use your living room, and choose a material that suits your lifestyle. Whether you go for a NZ-made corner sofa, a versatile 3+2+1 set, or a compact two-seater, getting these basics right means you'll love your sofa for years to come. How to Choose the Perfect Dining Table Size for Your Space
Choosing a dining table sounds simple until you actually start shopping. Too big, and your dining room feels cramped with people squeezing past chairs. Too small, and family dinners feel crowded with elbows bumping and no room for serving dishes. The right dining table fits your space, seats everyone comfortably, and still leaves room to move around. This guide helps you work out the ideal table size for your dining area, what shapes work best in different rooms, and how to match your table with the right chairs. How Much Space Does a Dining Table Actually Need? Before you look at any tables, measure your dining area. The table itself is only part of the equation. You also need space for chairs to pull out, for people to sit down and stand up, and for someone to walk behind seated diners. Here's a simple formula to work with. Allow at least 90cm between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. This gives enough room for chairs to be pulled out and for someone to walk past. If the table is against a wall on one side, you only need that clearance on the sides where people will sit. For the table surface itself, allow approximately 60cm of width per person. This gives each diner enough room for a place setting without feeling squeezed. For more comfortable spacing, aim for 70cm per person. Choosing the Right Table Size by Room Small dining areas (under 3m x 3m): A table around 120cm long seats four people comfortably. The Skog Wooden Dining Table (120cm) is a solid choice for smaller spaces. Its clean wooden design looks great without overwhelming the room, and at 120cm it leaves plenty of clearance even in a compact dining area. Medium dining areas (3m x 3.5m): A table between 140cm and 160cm seats four to six people. The Lavina Dining Table with MDF Top (120cm) works for this space, or you can step up to the Grey Marble Look Dining Table (160cm) if you have room for a six-seater and want a more contemporary look. The marble look finish adds a touch of elegance without the weight and maintenance of actual stone. Large dining areas or open-plan living (4m+ width): Tables of 180cm and above seat six to eight people and suit families who entertain regularly or have larger households. Round vs Rectangular: Which Shape Works Best? Rectangular tables are the most common choice and the most space-efficient. They sit neatly against a wall or in the centre of a room, and they can accommodate extra diners by adding chairs at the ends. Most New Zealand dining rooms are rectangular, which makes a rectangular table the natural fit. Round tables are brilliant for conversation because everyone can see each other. They work well in square rooms or open-plan spaces where a rectangular table might feel too formal. The trade-off is that round tables can be harder to place in narrow rooms and don't tuck against walls as neatly. Square tables suit small spaces and couples or small families. They become awkward for more than four people because the width needed to seat six around a square table takes up a lot of room. Matching Your Table with the Right Chairs The relationship between your dining table and chairs affects both comfort and aesthetics. Here are the key measurements to get right. Seat height to table height: Standard dining tables are around 75cm tall. Standard dining chairs have a seat height of about 45cm. This leaves roughly 30cm between your lap and the underside of the table, which is comfortable for most people. If you're buying a table and chairs separately, check this gap before you commit. Chair width and spacing: Make sure the chairs you choose aren't wider than the per-person space at the table. Armchairs need about 65cm of width each, while armless chairs can fit in about 50cm. For a classic look, the Bentwood Black PU Leather Dining Chair pairs well with both wooden and modern tables. If you prefer colour, velvet dining chairs make a statement. The Evian Velvet Dining Chair in Orange (Set of 2) or Ogden Velvet Dining Chair in Silver (Set of 2) add personality to a simple table. For a more understated look, the Roone Linen Dining Chair in Grey (Set of 2) is a versatile choice. The Ceilean Velvet Dining Chair in Green (Set of 2), Zakeer Velvet Dining Chair in Green, Parson Velvet Dining Chair in Teal (Set of 2), and Brawley Velvet Dining Chair in Pink all offer bold colour options for anyone wanting to make their dining area a focal point. For a more modern, streamlined look, the Palomar Dining Chair in Velvet Aqua Blue is a standout piece. Consider a Dining Bench for Flexibility Benches are becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand dining rooms, and for good reason. They slide neatly under the table when not in use, seat more people than individual chairs in the same space, and create a casual, relaxed atmosphere. The Grey Marble Look Dining Bench (140cm) pairs perfectly with the marble look dining table for a coordinated set. Using a bench on one side and chairs on the other gives you the best of both worlds: the flexibility of a bench and the comfort of individual seating. Complete Your Dining Area A dining table and chairs are the essentials, but a few complementary pieces can make your dining area feel more complete and functional. A buffet table or sideboard near the dining table gives you somewhere to store tableware, serve food during gatherings, and display decorative items. The Glansig White Buffet Table (180cm) is a clean, modern option. The Anshos Buffet with LED Light (108cm) in white or white/grey adds ambient lighting that works well during evening dinners. For a warmer, timber-look option, the Marama Tambour Buffet Table (140cm) or the Ayla Tambour Sideboard (100cm) have a distinctive ribbed design that adds texture to your dining space. The Olveston Sideboard (155cm) is another stylish option with a more contemporary profile. Your Dining Table Size Cheat Sheet Here's a quick reference for how many people different table sizes can seat comfortably. 120cm table: 4 people. Best for couples and small families in compact dining areas. 140cm table: 4 to 6 people. Works well in medium-sized rooms and for families of four with occasional guests. 160cm table: 6 people. Ideal for families who entertain regularly or have five to six household members. 180cm+ table: 6 to 8 people. Suits large dining rooms, open-plan living, and families who love hosting. How to Plan the Perfect Outdoor Dining Setup for Summer Entertaining
There's something about eating outdoors in summer that makes even a simple meal feel like an occasion. A properly set up outdoor dining area turns your backyard into the best restaurant in the neighbourhood, and it's where some of your favourite summer memories will happen. Whether you're hosting a big family Christmas lunch, a casual Friday evening BBQ, or just want somewhere nice to eat dinner on warm nights, getting your outdoor dining setup right makes all the difference. This guide walks you through everything you need to consider, from choosing the right table and chairs to setting the mood with lighting and shade, so your outdoor dining area works as hard as you want it to. Choose the Right Table for How You Entertain The table is the centrepiece of any outdoor dining area, so it's worth getting this decision right first. Think about how many people you typically host and how you like to entertain. For regular family dinners of four to six people, a standard outdoor dining set is the most practical choice. The Nastro Outdoor Dining Set features a lightweight aluminium frame that's easy to move around the deck or patio. Aluminium is a smart choice for New Zealand conditions because it won't rust in coastal areas and stays cool enough to touch even on hot days. If you prefer a more classic look, the 5-Piece Cast Aluminium Dining Set has a timeless style that suits both modern and traditional homes. Cast aluminium is heavier and sturdier, which means it won't blow around in the wind and feels more permanent in your outdoor space. For smaller balconies, courtyards, or when you want a second dining spot in the garden, a bistro set is ideal. The Enkel Outdoor Bistro 5-Piece Set gives you a compact table with four chairs that's perfect for morning coffee or a relaxed lunch for two. The Naturlig Outdoor Bistro Set and the Messina Bistro Set offer similar versatility with slightly different styles, so you can pick whatever suits your space best. Add a Bar Area for a More Social Setup If your entertaining style leans more towards casual drinks and grazing platters than sit-down dinners, consider adding a bar-height setting to your outdoor area. Bar settings encourage people to mingle and move around, which creates a more relaxed, social atmosphere. The 3-Piece BCP Outdoor Bar Set in PE Wicker gives you a bar-height table with two stools in a compact footprint. It works brilliantly next to the BBQ, giving the cook somewhere to set drinks and plates while they work. It also doubles as a morning coffee spot or a place to sit and watch the kids play. A bar setup also pairs well with a traditional dining table. Position the bar set near the BBQ or drinks area and the dining table further out on the lawn or deck. This creates natural zones that encourage guests to flow between eating, drinking, and socialising throughout the evening. Create a Lounge-to-Dining Flow The best outdoor entertaining areas blend dining and lounging together. After a big meal, people naturally want to shift somewhere more comfortable for dessert, drinks, or conversation. Having both options available means nobody has to go back inside. The 4-Piece Outdoor Sofa Set in PE Rattan is a great lounge option to pair with your dining setup. Position it nearby but separate from the dining table, perhaps under a shade sail or next to a fire pit, and you've got a natural second zone for your outdoor entertaining area. For larger gatherings, the Ettaro 6-Piece Outdoor Set provides plenty of seating for everyone to spread out after dinner. The Messina Conversation Set is another solid option that creates a cosy spot for after-dinner chat without taking up too much space. If you have a covered porch or a quiet corner in the garden, a Cannes Rocking Chair with the matching Cannes Footstool adds a relaxed, resort-style feel that guests always gravitate towards. Shade Is Essential for Daytime Entertaining If you're hosting lunch or an afternoon gathering, shade is non-negotiable. Nobody wants to sit in full sun trying to eat while squinting at their plate, and your food won't last long in direct sunlight either. A Cantilever Patio Umbrella (3m) is the most popular choice for shading a dining table. The offset design means the pole doesn't sit in the middle of your table, which gives you more room and looks much cleaner. You can also tilt it to follow the sun throughout the day. For larger dining areas or when you're hosting a crowd, a gazebo gives you more substantial coverage. The Gazebo with Silver-Coated Roof (3m x 3m) reflects heat and provides enough shade for a six-person dining table. If you need even more room for a buffet table or bar setup alongside your dining area, the Xclusive Gazebo (3m x 6m) covers a generous area and comes in white, black, and navy to match your style. Shade sails are a more permanent option that look fantastic in any backyard. A Shade Sail (4m x 5m) can cover your entire dining area, and because they're angled rather than flat, they create interesting shadow patterns that add to the atmosphere. Set the Mood with Lighting Outdoor dining really comes alive in the evening, and the right lighting transforms the experience. The goal is warm, ambient light that lets people see their food and each other without feeling like they're sitting under a floodlight. Festoon lights are the gold standard for outdoor dining. The Suspended Socket Festoon Lights with LED Bulbs (12m) are perfect for stringing above a dining table. For larger areas, the 17m Festoon Lights with LED Bulbs give you more length to work with. If you prefer a warmer, more traditional glow, the Tungsten Bulb Festoon Lights have that classic warm tone that flatters food and faces alike. String your festoon lights in a zigzag pattern above the dining area, running from the house to the fence or between posts. Hang them at about 2.5 to 3 metres high so they create a canopy effect without anyone walking into them. Add Warmth for Those Cooler Evenings New Zealand summer evenings can turn cool surprisingly quickly, especially once the sun drops behind the hills. Having a heat source nearby extends your outdoor dining well into the night and adds another element to the atmosphere. A Camping Fire Pit BBQ 2-in-1 Grill Smoker pulls double duty. You can use it to cook on during dinner and then keep it burning for warmth and ambience once the meal is over. It's portable, so you can position it wherever you need it and pack it away when the season's done. Pair it with the Fireplace Tool Set for safe and easy fire management. Don't Forget the Finishing Touches The small details are what separate a nice outdoor dinner from a really memorable one. Here are some simple extras that make your setup feel complete. A 2-Person Picnic Basket is perfect for those evenings when you want to take dinner down to the garden or the beach. It comes with an insulated blanket and has a vintage look that adds charm to any summer outing. An Outdoor Foam Bag Chair or two creates extra casual seating for when the chairs are full and latecomers need somewhere to sit. They're lightweight, easy to move, and add a relaxed vibe. An 80L Outdoor Storage Box keeps cushions, tablecloths, candles, and other entertaining essentials tidy and dry between uses. No more hunting through the garage for the festoon lights when guests are arriving in twenty minutes. Your Outdoor Dining Setup Checklist Here's a quick summary of what makes a complete outdoor dining area for summer entertaining. Dining table and chairs: Match the size to your typical guest count. A standard dining set for family meals, or a bistro set for smaller spaces. Bar setting (optional): A bar-height table and stools near the BBQ creates a casual, social hub. Lounge seating: An outdoor sofa set or conversation set for post-dinner relaxation. Shade: A cantilever umbrella over the dining table, or a gazebo or shade sail for larger areas. Lighting: Festoon lights strung above the dining area for warm evening ambience. Warmth: A fire pit or outdoor heater for cooler evenings. Storage: An outdoor storage box for cushions and entertaining accessories. Ready to Set Up Your Summer Dining Area? The best outdoor dining setups grow over time. How to Set Up a Backyard Pool Area on a Budget
You don't need to spend thousands to give your family a pool area they'll use all summer. A decent inflatable pool, some shade, and a couple of smart additions can turn a patch of lawn into the best spot in the neighbourhood. Most families can get a solid setup going for somewhere between $150 and $500, depending on how far they want to take it. This guide covers how to do it properly, from choosing the right pool and finding the best spot in your yard to the practical stuff like water maintenance and ground protection that most guides skip over. What You Can Expect to Spend Before diving into the details, here's a realistic breakdown of what a backyard pool area costs in New Zealand. You don't need everything at once. Start with the essentials and add to it over time. Starter setup (under $150): A wading pool, a ground mat or old blanket underneath, and sunscreen. This is all you really need to keep young kids happy on a hot day. Mid-range setup ($200 to $350): A family-sized pool, a pop-up gazebo or shade sail, and a couple of outdoor chairs or bean bags. This gives you a proper pool area that the whole family can enjoy. Full setup ($400 to $600+): A larger frame pool with a filter pump, shade structure, outdoor furniture, festoon lights, and a storage box. This is the "summer headquarters" setup that lasts the whole season. The key is buying what matters most first and building from there. A good pool and some shade will get you 80% of the enjoyment. Everything else is a bonus. How to Choose the Right Pool The right pool depends on three things: the ages of your kids, the size of your backyard, and how much setup you want to deal with. For toddlers and young kids (under 5), a shallow wading pool is the safest and simplest option. They fill quickly, use less water, and are easy to empty and store. Look for one that's at least 1.3m across so there's room to actually play, not just sit. The Bestway Kids Wading Pool (1.40m x 1.30m) is a good starting size. If you have two or three little ones, the larger 2.39m x 2.06m version is worth the step up so they're not on top of each other. For families with mixed ages, you want something deeper and bigger so older kids and adults can enjoy it too. A family pool with a built-in canopy like the Bestway Family Pool with Canopy (2.13m x 1.55m) solves two problems at once: pool and shade in a single purchase. The Bestway Dunk n' Splash Family Pool is another option that adds interactive features to keep older kids entertained for longer. For anyone wanting a proper swimming experience, a steel frame pool is the way to go. The Bestway Steel Pro Max (4.27m x 1.22m) comes with a filter pump included, which means you fill it once and maintain the water all summer rather than draining and refilling every few days. It's a bigger investment up front, but the cost per use over a full summer makes it excellent value. Quick tip: Many of the Bestway pools come in bundles with water toys like the Family Pool with ZURU X-Shot Hydro Cannon or the Dunk n' Splash with ZURU Shark Slide and Bunch O' Balloons. These bundles save you buying pool toys separately. Finding the Right Spot in Your Backyard Where you put your pool matters more than most people realise. A bad spot means more cleaning, colder water, and a pool area nobody wants to use. A good spot means warm water, easy supervision, and less maintenance. Choose flat ground. Even a slight slope causes uneven water levels that put extra strain on inflatable pools and can eventually cause them to fail. If your yard slopes, find the flattest section. You can check with a spirit level or simply place a bucket of water on the ground and see if it sits even. Face north for warmth. In New Zealand, north-facing areas get the most direct sunlight. This makes a noticeable difference to water temperature. A pool in full sun can be 5 to 8 degrees warmer than one in shade, which means the kids will actually want to get in rather than complaining that it's too cold. Stay away from trees. Overhanging branches mean leaves, sap, insects, and bird droppings in your pool. Even a tree a few metres away can cause problems on windy days. The cleaner your pool location, the less time you'll spend fishing debris out with a net. Keep it visible from inside. Being able to see the pool from your kitchen or living room window makes supervision easier and means you're more likely to use it yourself. A pool hidden in a back corner gets forgotten surprisingly quickly. Think about drainage. When you eventually empty the pool, that water needs to go somewhere. Aim it towards garden beds or a drain rather than against the house or into a neighbour's yard. For frame pools that hold thousands of litres, this is especially important to plan ahead. What to Put Under Your Pool (and Why It Matters) This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that causes the most regret. Placing a pool directly on grass or dirt leads to punctures from stones and sticks, an uneven base that's uncomfortable to stand on, and dead grass that takes weeks to recover. At minimum, lay down a ground sheet or old tarp underneath the pool. This protects the pool base from sharp objects and makes cleanup easier at the end of summer. Even better, use interlocking foam floor tiles (the kind sold for home gyms and garages). They cushion the base, protect against punctures, and insulate the bottom of the pool from cold ground so the water stays warmer for longer. For frame pools, consider laying down a layer of sand (about 2cm deep) over the area first, then a ground sheet on top. This creates a smooth, level base that distributes the weight of the water evenly and feels much more comfortable underfoot. Whatever you use, make sure it extends at least 30cm beyond the pool walls in every direction. This protects the edges and gives you a cleaner surface to step onto when getting in and out. Adding Shade Without Spending a Fortune Sun protection isn't optional in New Zealand. Our UV levels are among the highest in the world, and kids playing in and around water for hours need proper shade to retreat to. Shade also stops the pool water from getting uncomfortably hot in the middle of the day, which sounds like a good problem to have until you try sitting in a 35-degree inflatable pool. Pop-up gazebos are the most versatile option. They go up in minutes, provide instant shade, and can be used for birthdays, barbecues, and market days the rest of the year. Position one next to the pool rather than over it so you have a shaded area to dry off and rest without blocking the sun from the water entirely. The Gazebo with Silver-Coated Roof (3m x 3m) reflects heat as well as blocking UV, which keeps the shaded area noticeably cooler. Shade sails are a more permanent solution that look great in any backyard. A 4m x 5m Shade Sail covers enough area for the pool and a seating spot beside it. They take a bit more effort to install (you'll need mounting points on a fence, house wall, or posts), but once they're up, they're low maintenance and won't blow away in the wind like a gazebo might. The free option: If you're on a tight budget, reposition an existing patio umbrella beside the pool. It's not ideal for large areas, but it gives you a shaded spot to sit while supervising the kids and costs nothing extra. Keeping the Water Clean Between Uses Nobody wants to swim in murky green water, and draining and refilling an entire pool every couple of days gets expensive and wasteful quickly. Here's how to get more use out of each fill. For wading pools and small inflatables, empty and refill every two to three days in hot weather. The smaller volume of water warms up and breeds bacteria faster than a larger pool. In between uses, cover the pool with a tarp or old sheet to keep bugs and debris out. For family-sized inflatable pools, invest in a small pool skimmer net (a few dollars from any hardware store) and skim the surface daily. Adding a capful of plain pool chlorine after each use keeps the water safe for several days. Change the water fully once a week. For frame pools with filter pumps, the pump does most of the work. Run it for at least 6 to 8 hours a day during heavy use periods. Test and adjust the chlorine levels once a week using test strips (available cheaply online or at pool shops). A pool cover between uses dramatically reduces debris and slows chemical evaporation, keeping the water cleaner for longer. The Swimming Pool Cover Roller makes covering and uncovering a larger pool quick and easy. Water-saving tip: When you do need to change pool water, use it to water the garden instead of sending it down the drain. As long as the chlorine levels are low (wait a day or two after the last chlorine dose), it's perfectly fine for lawns and garden beds. Creating a Comfortable Poolside Area A few chairs and a bit of shade turn a pool into a pool "area." This is where the experience goes from "the kids have a pool" to "we have a backyard oasis." The most important thing is having somewhere for adults to sit comfortably while supervising. It doesn't need to be fancy. A couple of camping chairs work fine in the short term. But if you want something that looks good and lasts multiple summers, an outdoor furniture set designed for weather resistance is the better investment. The 4-Piece Outdoor Sofa Set in PE Rattan gives you a full lounge setup that handles moisture and sun without deteriorating. PE rattan won't rust, peel, or absorb water the way natural materials can. For a more casual vibe, Outdoor Foam Bag Chairs are lightweight, comfortable, and a hit with kids and adults alike. Layout tip: Position your seating so you can see the entire pool from where you're sitting. This sounds obvious, but many people set up chairs facing the house or angled away from the water. Safety first, comfort second. Extending into the Evenings Summer evenings in New Zealand are too good to spend inside. A few simple additions turn your pool area from a daytime spot into an all-evening hangout. Festoon lights with LED bulbs (12m) strung above the pool area create instant atmosphere. Hang them at about 2.5 to 3 metres high in a zigzag pattern between the fence and the house. LED bulbs use minimal power, so you can leave them on all evening without worrying about the electricity bill. For larger areas, the 17m version gives you more length to play with. Keeping Everything Tidy Pool toys, inflatables, towels, goggles, and sunscreen accumulate fast. Without a storage solution, your pool area quickly looks like a mess, and wet items left on the grass create mould and damage the lawn. An 80L Outdoor Storage Box next to the pool gives everything a home. It's waterproof, so you can throw damp pool toys straight in without drying them first. At the end of summer, it doubles as off-season storage for your pool accessories. Organisation tip: Use separate mesh bags inside the storage box for different categories (pool toys in one, towels in another, sunscreen and goggles in a third). This stops the box becoming a jumbled mess where you can never find anything. What to Buy First (and What Can Wait) If you're setting up from scratch and don't want to buy everything at once, here's the order that gives you the most enjoyment for the least money. Buy first: A pool that suits your family, and something to put underneath it (ground sheet, tarp, or foam tiles). This alone gives you a functional pool area. Buy second: Shade. Whether that's a gazebo, shade sail, or umbrella, sun protection is essential for extended use and safety. Buy third: Seating. Even basic outdoor chairs make a huge difference to how much time adults spend at the pool area rather than watching from inside. Buy when you're ready: Festoon lights, outdoor storage, and extras like basketball hoops or soccer rebounders. These are the upgrades that take your pool area from good to great, but they're not essential to get started. Ready to Set Up Your Summer Pool Area? The best backyard pool areas aren't built in a day. Start with the basics, use them, and figure out what you actually want to add based on how your family uses the space. You might find that a simple wading pool with a shade sail is all you need. Or you might end up with a full Steel Pro Max setup with festoon lights and a rattan lounge set. Either way, starting simple and building up is the smartest way to stay on budget. Browse the full range of pools, outdoor furniture, and gazebos at TSB Living.
