Bed Frame Buying Guide NZ

Bed Frame Buying Guide NZ

Buying Guide · Bed Frames · NZ Edition Frames, bases, sizes, and under-bed storage, as well as the structural integrity of a Kiwi bedroom. Simple responses from the TSB Living team regarding online purchases in the absence of a showroom. If you only read one section Buying a bed frame? Get these four right. The majority of individuals purchase bed frames based on their aesthetic appeal and affordability. On a daily basis, you are confronted with these four decisions, in this specific order. The remaining information is contained in the subsequent chapters, which include the NZ-specific sizing that confuses buyers who rely on overseas guides. Determine whether to begin with the base or the frame. A bed base is essentially an upholstered platform that is used to support a mattress. Slats and a headboard are typically the components of a frame. Mattresses are present in both. There is an object against which to rest. Size is determined by the room, followed by the number of sleepers. Ensure that each open side has a minimum of 60 cm of walking space. Before a Super King tempts you, measure the doorway, the hall corner, and the stair turn. Complement the mattress with the appropriate support. The foam must not sag between the slats, which is why they require modest gaps. In a damp room, a solid platform necessitates a more rigorous airing regimen and provides a firmer underfoot feel. Budgeting with integrity. Upholstered bases are priced at approximately $109, while metal platform frames begin at approximately $90. The majority of mature Queens are priced between $149 and $500. Over and above that, you are purchasing upholstery and storage, not strength. When choosing a bed frame, there are three choices in the right order: the size your room can take, whether you want a plain upholstered base or a frame with a headboard and slats, and whether you need storage underneath. In New Zealand, that means picking from the local size ladder, Single through Super King, including the King Single that most countries don't have. The safe bet for most Kiwi couples is an upholstered Queen base or fabric frame, between $149 and $299. A metal or wooden Single does the job properly from around $90 for a kid or spare bedroom. When you buy a bed frame online, you can't sit on it first, and that worries people more than it should. A frame is mostly a structural decision, unlike a mattress, and you can read structure off a spec: what the legs are made of, whether the slats are timber or metal, how the headboard attaches, whether the base is one piece or splits for the stairs. This guide offers clear answers to each of these questions, based on the actual products we stock and ship across New Zealand. The first line of each chapter contains the answer, allowing you to quickly scan the bold text and make an informed decision. In this guide Bed frame, bed base, or slat base? (What the names actually mean.) A bed base is a platform with legs that is upholstered and onto which a mattress is placed directly. A headboard and a slatted center are typically included in a bed frame. The mattress is supported by a slat base, which is a metal or timber grid. The words are used loosely throughout the industry, including in our own product titles. Therefore, it is more important to read the picture and the description than the name. The four builds Upholstered platform Bed base A box with a solid or sprung top that is supported by legs and covered in fabric. There is no headboard. The most straightforward and cost-effective method of elevating a mattress from the ground and achieving a polished appearance. Headboard plus slats Fabric bed frame An upholstered headboard joined to side rails with timber or metal slats across the middle. The most common adult bedroom choice, and the one that makes a room look designed. Timber or steel Platform frame A low headboard, occasionally accompanied by a bare metal or wooden frame. Strong, lightweight, inexpensive, and readily transportable. There is nothing to scuff or stain. Frame plus drawers Storage bed A frame with drawers built into the base, or a lift-up top with a cavity underneath. Buys back a chest of drawers' worth of space in a small room. All four hold a mattress at the same height. What separates them is whether you get a headboard, storage, or neither. Anatomy of a bed frame 1 2 3 4 5 Five parts, and the two that fail first HeadboardThe part you lean against, and the whole reason a frame costs more than a base. Upholstered, timber or metal. Side railCarries the load into the legs. On cheap frames this is where a bolt works loose and the squeak starts. SlatsTimber or metal, spanning the middle. Gap width is what decides whether a foam mattress sags between them. LegsFour at the corners on most frames. Height sets whether under-bed storage boxes fit. Centre supportThe single most useful part on a Queen or larger, and the one budget frames leave out. Without it, slats bow. On anything Queen or wider, check the listing mentions a centre support leg. It is the difference between a frame that lasts and one that sags in the middle. What about bunks and mid-sleepers? A bunk is the same structural decision made twice in one footprint, and it’s how we categorize kids' bed frames. For the range, there are three shapes to cover: a standard bunk with two full berths, a mid-sleeper that lifts one bed to free the floor underneath for a desk or storage, and a triple that adds a wider bottom berth. 19 bunk frames with mid-sleepers from $282 and standard bunks from $429. Ceiling height, guardrail depth, ladder angle, and the minimum age for the top berth are all factors that are more critical in this location than in any other location in the range. Our bunk bed guide comprehensively addresses each of them prior to your final decision. Slats or a solid platform? (The type TSB sorts by) Our range is mostly slatted frames with 128 products and is the default recommendation for a New Zealand bedroom. A slatted center lets air circulate under the mattress, which is important in a cold, damp room. A solid platform base feels a little more solid underfoot and traps more overnight moisture, so it demands a more regular airing habit. If you want to browse by this distinction directly, we sort the range that way: slatted bed frames from $139 and solid platform bed bases from $109. Does the mattress care what is underneath it? Yes, more than the majority of individuals realize. The slatted center is crucial in a cold, damp New Zealand bedroom, as it allows air to circulate beneath the mattress. A solid platform is slightly firmer and retains a greater amount of moisture overnight, necessitating a more consistent airing schedule. We have published a comprehensive comparison of bed bases and slats for bedrooms in New Zealand. In summary, both options are viable provided that the airflow is effectively managed. Slat spacing is the sole absolute requirement. A sprung mattress is more forgiving, while foam and hybrid mattresses require modest gaps to prevent them from settling into the spaces between. Before making a purchase, verify the slat gap on the product page if you are combining a new frame with a foam mattress. Chapter 02 Materials Which bed frame material is best? (Metal, wood, upholstered.) Metal is the cheapest and easiest to move, wood is the most repairable, and upholstered fabric is the one that makes a bedroom look finished. At these prices, none is stronger than the others in any way that matters. Decide how long you’re going to keep it, how often it will be moved, and if you want a headboard to lean on. Metal: the flat and rental workhorse A steel platform frame is the cheapest way to get a mattress properly supported. Our metal range starts at $90 across 28 frames. It screws together in minutes, comes apart just as easily, and has survived being moved three times in two years without complaint. The compromises are real ones: no headboard on most models, and cheap steel joints can squeak once they have loosened, which a spanner will fix in a minute. If you’re furnishing a first flat, a spare room or a bed that’ll soon be on the move again, metal is the sensible money. Wood: repairable, quiet, kid-proof Timber frames sit in the middle in price and last well because they can be repaired. A loose joint takes a screw; a scuff takes sand and a touch-up. Our wooden range runs to 57 frames from $139, and the painted Hampshire range at $169 is the one parents keep buying for kids and teens, because a wooden headboard survives being kicked, drawn on, and climbed over. Wood is heavier to shift, and solid timber does not like being assembled and disassembled repeatedly. Fabric: the one that finishes a room Fabric frames and bases are used to encase a timber structure in linen, velvet, bouclé, or PU. They are silent, comfortable to rest against, and contribute significantly to the aesthetic and emotional appeal of a bedroom at an affordable price. With 94 products, this is the most extensive sector of our product line. The bouclé base is priced at $109, while the linen Innogen frame is priced at $239. The exchange is clean. Fabric marks are present, and unlike a wooden frame, they are not sandable. This is inappropriate for a children's room or a rental property that accommodates pets. It is typically the appropriate choice for a primary bedroom. The fabric range is illustrated in the spread. A bouclé or linen is light and shows every mark, and a bedroom is a room where hair oil, sunscreen, and coffee will all end up on the headboard eventually. Worth knowing before you pick a color. There is much more hidden in the darker grays and charcoals. The three materials, side by side Metal 28 frames, from $90 Wins Cheapest, lightest, fastest to move Costs Rarely a headboard; joints can squeak Buy if The bed moves again within two years Wood 57 frames, from $139 Wins Repairable, quiet, survives kids Costs Heavy; dislikes repeated flat-packing Buy if It is a kids room or a keeper Fabric 94 frames, from $109 Wins Warm to lean on; finishes the room Costs Marks, and you cannot sand fabric Buy if It is the main bedroom, in a darker shade Prices are the lowest size in each material as at 24 August 2026. None is meaningfully stronger than the others at these prices; choose on how long it stays and how often it moves. Chapter 03 Size What size bed frame do I need? (NZ sizes explained.) Queen is the New Zealand default for couples, and the size most of our frames are built around. The upgrade worth knowing about for a single adult or tall teenager is the King Single. It’s normal for a kid to move out of a cot, single. The measurements below are the standard NZ sizing, but the measurements listed on each product page are the ones to trust for the frame you are actually buying. The NZ size ladder Single King Single Double Queen King Super King Kids and bunk rooms Single 91 × 188 cm Suits a room from 2.4m × 3.0m The standard first big-kid bed and the size most bunks are built to. Fits a room a Double never would. Centimetres are standard NZ sizing. Frame footprints run larger than the mattress, so check the product page dimensions before you measure the room. Every NZ size, drawn to one scale Single91 × 188 cmKing Single107 × 203 cmDouble137 × 188 cmQueen153 × 203 cmKing167 × 203 cmSuper King183 × 203 cmSAME SCALE, BOTH AXES · LENGTH STEPS UP AT KING SINGLE Drawn to a single scale, so the differences are honest. Single and Double share the same 188cm length; everything from King Single up runs 203cm, which is the step that matters if either sleeper is over about 180cm. The room decides before you do Keep in mind that the frame must physically reach each open side of the bed, so leave at least 60 cm of walking space. Super King aspirations die in stairwells, hall corners, and small doorways, which is why our NZ-made Super King bases are made in two parts. Take the larger one if you are in between sizes. There has never been a complaint about an excessively wide bed. NZ quirk you should know: Double and Single are the same length at 188cm then everything from King Single up is 203cm. If one of the sleepers is over about 180cm tall, choose the 203cm club and consider Double as a one-adult size. If the room is genuinely tight, read our small bedroom ideas guide before you settle on a size. A Double with bedside tables usually beats a Queen jammed wall to wall. Buy the size the room can breathe around, not the biggest bed that technically fits through the door. TSB Living Team Chapter 04 Our Ranges Which TSB bed frame range is right for you? (Enkel, Boucle, Innogen, decoded.) Our range names describe the construction: Xclusive Metal is the bare steel platform, Boucle and Enkel are the upholstered bases without headboards, Hampshire is the painted wood for kids, and Innogen is the tufted linen frame for a main bedroom. The entire catalog translated into one honest table, so that the product pages make sense before you open them. The product page is always the current truth. Two practical remarks: The Boucle and Enkel bases show up underneath bed frames but don’t come with a headboard, so if you’re after something to lean against, team one with a headboard or step up to Innogen. There are a few ranges that appear under two product titles, with and without a "DS" prefix; they are the same product, so buy whichever is available in your size. If the bedroom is under about 3 metres wide, or there is no wardrobe worth the name, a storage bed usually earns its extra cost within a year. Drawers under the bed hold roughly what a small tallboy holds, in floor space you were giving to the bed anyway. If the room already has a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, skip it and put the money into the frame or the mattress. We sort storage two ways, and the names are worth knowing because they describe different mechanisms. Beds with drawers start at $289 across 16 frames. Gas lift beds start at $359 across 5 frames, and use gas struts to hinge the entire mattress platform upward on one deep cavity. Drawers or gas lift: how the two builds work SIDE DRAWERS Slides into the floor space beside the bed Reached without stripping the bedding Loses one side if the bed sits in a corner Best for what you touch weekly GAS LIFT One deep cavity, far more volume Needs the bed stripped back to open Best for what you touch twice a year Drawers win on access, gas lift wins on volume. In a room too narrow to pull a drawer fully out, gas lift is the only one that actually works. What storage costs you A storage frame runs roughly $150 to $250 above the plain version of the same size. Our drawer frames start at $289, and the gas lift range runs $359 to $499, topping out with the wooden Harrogate in Queen. That is real money, so weigh it against a tallboy from $119, which holds a similar amount and can leave the room with you. Two things to check before committing. Drawer frames are heavier and almost always ship flat-packed with more assembly steps than a plain base, and the drawers need clearance to open, so a bed pushed into a corner loses one side of its storage. If damp is a concern in your room, remember that anything stored under a bed sits in the least ventilated part of it; our guide to stopping damp damaging furniture covers what survives down there and what does not. Chapter 06 Combos Should you buy a bed and mattress combo? Buy the combo if you need both pieces anyway. It solves the frame, the base and the mattress in one decision and one delivery, the sizing is guaranteed to match, and the bundle price beats buying the two separately. Buy them apart if you already own a mattress you like, or if you want a specific mattress build that the bundle does not offer. Combos are the single largest part of our bed range, and they exist because the two most common bed-buying mistakes are both sizing mistakes: a Queen mattress ordered for a Double frame, and a frame whose slat spacing does not suit the mattress that arrives on top of it. A bundle removes both. Combo What you get Size Price Novo Bed and Bonnell Mattress Upholstered frame plus 15cm Bonnell spring Queen $502 Sovo Oak Frame and Bon15 Mattress Oak-finish frame plus Bonnell spring Queen $518 Browse the full combo range Frame, base and mattress bundles All sizes From $234 Prices checked 24 August 2026. Combo pricing moves with promotions more often than single items do. Combos are not only an adult decision. Bunk beds pair with two mattresses rather than one, which is where the sizing goes wrong most often, so we bundle those too: 44 bunk and mattress combos from $532, both mattresses matched to the frame. A Polli mid-sleeper with two Bon10 singles is the entry point at that price. The honest limit of a combo is mattress choice. Bundles pair a frame with whichever mattress makes the price work, and that is usually a Bonnell spring, which is firm, durable and the right call for a spare room or a first flat. If you sleep on your side, share with a light sleeper, or run hot, read the mattress buying guide first and buy the mattress on its own merits. The frame can still come from here. Chapter 07 Which to Buy Which bed frame should you buy? (Best for your situation.) Six situations cover most people reading this. Scroll the situations below and find yours. If you fall into two, solve the bed you sleep in every night first. The order to do this in 1 Measure the room Bed footprint plus 60cm of walking space on each open side. This decides the size before anything else does. Before you shop 2 Measure the route Doorway, hall corner, stair turn. Flat-packed frames clear most of it; one-piece bases are where it goes wrong. Before you order 3 Match base to mattress Check slat spacing against the mattress type, and confirm a centre support on anything Queen or wider. At checkout 4 Assemble on the spot Build it in the room it lives in. Leave every bolt finger-tight until the frame is square, then go round and tighten. Delivery day 5 Retighten at six months Ten minutes with the supplied key. This is what stops the squeak that makes people think a frame has failed. Twice a year Most bed-buying regret traces back to step 1 or step 2, and most bed-frame complaints trace back to skipping step 5. Situation 01 Best for a first flat or a tight budget A metal platform frame in the size your room takes, or an upholstered Boucle base if you want it to look less like student furniture. Both are honest: nothing fancy, nothing to fail. This is the right money for a stage of life where the bed may move flats twice in two years. Look for Steel platform, or bouclé base without a headboard Price tier $90 to $199 in most sizes Pick Why this one Price Xclusive Metal Platform · Queen Cheapest Queen that supports a mattress properly $99 Xclusive Boucle Bed Base · Double Upholstered look at metal-frame money $139 Enkel Bed Base · Single Platform base on legs, tidy in a small room $149 Skip the metal frame if you are a light sleeper sharing the bed. Steel joints can develop a squeak that timber and upholstered frames do not. Shop metal bed frames Situation 02 Best for couples upgrading to a proper bed A Queen upholstered frame with a headboard. This is the purchase that ends the squeaky-old-Double era, and the headboard is most of why it feels like an upgrade: it turns the bed into the thing the room is arranged around rather than a mattress on legs. Look for Queen, upholstered, headboard included Price tier $149 to $500 for most Queens Pick Why this one Price Innogen Bed Frame Grey · Queen Our #2 seller; tufted linen with a real headboard $249 Enkel Bed Base · Queen #3 seller; plain platform if you plan to add a headboard $199 Xclusive Boucle Bed Base · Queen Our #1 seller overall; texture without the headboard cost $149 Skip the Queen if the bedroom is under 3 metres wide. A Double plus two bedside tables beats a Queen with nowhere to put a glass of water. Shop Queen bed frames Situation 03 Best for kids and teenagers A painted wooden Single or King Single with a headboard, or a bunk if two share the room. Kids do not need upholstery, they need something that survives being climbed on and can be repaired rather than replaced. If the height forecast looks tall, buy King Single now and skip a purchase later. Look for Wooden frame in Single or King Single, or a bunk if two share Price tier $90 to $539, or from $532 bundled with both mattresses Pick Why this one Price Hampshire Bed Frame · King Single Painted wood with a headboard, grows with them $169 Xclusive Metal Platform · King Single The cheapest way into the 203cm length $90 Mateo Bunk Bed · Oak and White Two beds in one footprint when siblings share $429 Xclusive Polli Mid-Sleeper Bunk Bed Raises one bed and frees the floor for a desk $282 Skip the bunk if the ceiling is low or the younger child is under six. Our bunk bed guide covers the safety checks properly, and the rest of the room is in kids room furniture. Shop kids bed frames and bunks Situation 04 Best for a small room that needs storage A frame with drawers built into the base. In a room where a chest of drawers would block the door or eat the walking space, the storage has to go under the bed, because that floor is already spent. Expect to pay roughly $150 to $250 more than the plain version of the same frame. Look for Side drawers, or gas lift if the room is too narrow to open a drawer Price tier $289 to $659 Pick Why this one Price Rae Bed Frame With Drawer · Double Cheapest way into under-bed storage $299 Harrogate Storage Bed Frame · Queen Gas lift, wooden build, most storage volume in the range $499 Xclusive Aigen Daybed with Drawers Doubles as seating in a room that works twice $239 Skip the drawers if the bed goes in a corner. You lose one side of the storage, and a $119 tallboy would have held more. Shop gas lift beds Situation 05 Best when you are starting from scratch A bed and mattress combo. Moving to New Zealand, furnishing a first home, or kitting out a rental: a bundle solves the frame, the base and the mattress in one decision and one delivery, and the sizing is guaranteed to match. This is the least stressful way to buy a bed online. Look for Frame plus mattress bundle in your size Why combo One delivery, matched sizing, bundle saving Pick Why this one Price Novo Bed and Bonnell Combo · Queen Our best-selling combo, upholstered frame included $502 Sovo Oak Frame and Bon15 · Queen Timber look, same mattress build $518 Browse all combos Every size from Single up From $234 Skip the combo if you already own a mattress worth keeping. Then you are only buying a frame, and chapters 1 to 4 are your map. Shop bed and mattress combos Situation 06 Best for the guest room or the bach A plain base or a folding bed. Guests need clean comfort for a weekend, not your forever frame. At the bach, prioritise something that handles cold, damp months unattended, which means a base you can lift and air rather than a storage frame with fabric drawers full of trapped moisture. Look for Simple base, easy to air, easy to move Price tier $109 to $199 Pick Why this one Price Enkel Bed Base · Double Tidy, plain, lifts easily for airing $185 Xclusive Boucle Bed Base · Single Cheapest upholstered base in the range $109 Folding beds Stores flat between visits From $99 Skip a permanent bed if the guest room is really your office. A folding bed or a sofa bed serves twice-a-year guests without costing you a room. Shop bed bases The best bed frame is the one that fits the room, the mattress and the stage of life you are actually in. TSB Living Team Chapter 08 Complete the Bed What else you need to finish the bed The frame is half the bed. These six finish the job, and most of them get remembered a fortnight after the frame arrives and the room still does not work. 01 Mattress The frame is half the bed. Match the size exactly, and check the slat spacing suits the mattress type before you order. Shop mattresses 02 Bed and mattress combo If the mattress is as tired as the frame, a bundle guarantees matched sizing and usually costs less than two separate decisions. Shop combos 03 Bedside tables The thing people forget until the first night. Match the height to the mattress top, not to the frame. Shop bedside tables 04 Tallboy or drawers If you skipped the storage bed, this is where the clothes go. Holds a similar amount and leaves the room with you. Shop tallboys 05 Bedding Breathable layers do half the temperature work in a cold room. Buy to the mattress size, not the frame size. Shop bedding 06 Mattress topper The cheapest way to change how an existing mattress feels when the new frame shows up its age. Shop toppers Chapter 09 FAQ Bed frame questions Kiwi buyers ask most What size bed frame do most NZ couples buy? Queen is the New Zealand default for couples and fits most main bedrooms with walking space on both sides. Step up to King or Super King only if the room is 3.5 metres wide or more. A Double suits couples in genuinely small rooms, but it is snug for two adults over a full night. What is the difference between a bed base and a bed frame? A bed base is an upholstered platform on legs that a mattress sits straight onto, with no headboard. A bed frame usually adds a headboard and side rails with slats across the middle. Both support a mattress at the same height; the frame is what gives you something to lean against. Do I need slats, or is a solid base better? Either works when matched to the mattress. Slats ventilate the underside, which helps in damp New Zealand bedrooms, and they suit foam mattresses provided the gaps are modest. A solid platform feels slightly firmer and traps more overnight moisture, so it needs a more regular airing habit. How much should I spend on a bed frame in NZ? In our range, metal platform frames start about $90 and upholstered bases about $109. Most adult Queens run between $149 and $500. Above that you are paying for storage drawers and upholstery rather than extra strength. Spend at the level the bed gets used. What size is a King Single, and who is it for? A King Single is 107 by 203 centimetres, wider and 15 centimetres longer than a standard Single. It is the best single-sleeper size in New Zealand, suiting teenagers, tall adults and guest rooms that host one person. If a kid's room has the space, it lasts through high school. Are storage beds worth the extra cost? In a room under about 3 metres wide, or one without a decent wardrobe, usually yes. Drawers hold roughly what a small tallboy holds, using floor space the bed already occupies. If you have a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, put the money into the frame or mattress instead. Will a bed frame fit up my stairs? Most flat-pack frames arrive in cartons that clear a standard stairwell, since assembly happens in the room. Larger one-piece bases are the risk. Our NZ-made Super King bases ship as a two-piece split base for exactly this reason, so check the carton dimensions on the product page first. Can I use my existing mattress on a new frame? Almost always, provided the sizes match exactly and the slat spacing suits the mattress type. Foam and hybrid mattresses need modest slat gaps so they do not settle between them; sprung mattresses are more forgiving. Check both the frame's internal dimensions and its slat spacing before ordering. Keep exploring Related guides More from the TSB Living team. Latex vs Memory Foam vs Hybrid Mattress in NZ

Choosing Between Latex, Memory Foam & Hybrid Mattresses in NZ Not all mattresses are built the same, and what works for one person can be completely wrong for another. Therefore, picking the right mattress is one of the most important decisions you can make for your sleep and overall health. Latex, memory foam, and hybrid each feel different, support differently, and suit different sleepers. Get it wrong, and you are dealing with poor sleep, back pain, and an expensive mistake. This guide breaks down all three, so you know exactly what you are choosing between. What is a Latex Mattress? Latex mattresses use either natural rubber sap or synthetic latex compounds. Natural latex lasts longer, stays cooler, and is the better environmental choice. Most buyers who go natural do not go back. The feel is bouncy and responsive. It does not swallow you the way memory foam does; instead, it pushes back, making it easy to move around at night. The pin-core holes and open-cell construction keep air moving through the mattress, so it sleeps noticeably cooler than foam. What is a Memory Foam Mattress? Memory foam responds to your body heat and body weight by softening where pressure is applied. Side sleepers tend to do well on it because it takes pressure off the hips and shoulders rather than pushing back against them. It also spreads weight evenly across the surface, reducing strain on the lower back over time. It also absorbs movement, so if your partner tosses and turns, you are less likely to feel it. The main downside is heat. Traditional memory foam traps heat because it wraps so closely around the body. Gel-infused versions help, but latex still runs cooler. What is a Hybrid Mattress? A hybrid combines a pocketed coil base with foam, latex, or both on top. The coils handle support, airflow, and bounce. The comfort layers on top handle pressure relief and cushioning. The result is a mattress that feels like a proper bed, not too stiff, not too soft, with better edge support and breathability than an all-foam option. Latex vs Memory Foam vs Hybrid: Detailed Comparison Comfort and Feel Latex is firm and springy. Memory foam is slow and enveloping. Hybrid sits in between: more lift than memory foam, more cushion than a traditional spring bed. If you like sleeping on top of your mattress rather than sinking into it, latex or hybrid will suit you better. Pressure Relief Memory foam is the strongest performer here. It wraps around pressure points and distributes weight evenly. Latex cushions well too, just with less contouring. Hybrid mattresses depend heavily on the comfort layer; a thick foam or latex top can match either of the other two. Temperature Regulation Latex wins. Its aerated structure keeps the surface cool all night. Hybrid comes second because the coil system allows air to move through the base. Memory foam, even with gel infusions, still tends to retain more heat than the other two. Support and Spinal Alignment All three can support the spine, but latex and hybrid do it more consistently. Latex holds its shape and keeps the spine neutral. Hybrid adds coil support underneath, which helps with edge-to-edge stability. Memory foam can be too soft in lower-density options, causing the hips to sink below the shoulders. Durability Natural latex lasts the longest, typically 12 to 15 years or more. Hybrid mattresses fall in the 9 to 12 year range depending on coil and foam quality. Memory foam usually lasts 7 to 10 years before body impressions become noticeable. Go with latex if you sleep hot, want something that lasts, or prefer a more natural material. It is the best long-term investment of the three. Go with memory foam if pressure relief is your main concern, particularly for shoulder or hip pain. It also works well if you share a bed and one partner is a light sleeper. Go with hybrid if you want a reliable all-rounder. It covers more sleep situations than the other two. At TSB Living, we stock all three types across multiple firmness levels like soft-medium, medium firm, firm, and extra firm.

How to Break In a New Mattress in NZ

The Complete Guide to Breaking In a New Mattress There is no way to speed up the process of breaking in a new mattress. This phase is inevitable for all mattresses, regardless of the material or price. Whether you are sleeping on memory foam, latex, or an innerspring, the materials inside need consistent pressure and time before they conform to your body. This guide covers what actually happens during break-in, how long it takes by mattress type, and the only methods worth using to speed it up safely. Why Does a New Mattress Feel So Firm? Mattresses are manufactured and packaged under compression. Until a mattress sees regular use, the internal layers, whether foam, coils, or latex, hold their original shape. Memory foam takes the longest because it only responds when there is consistent warmth and pressure on the surface. Innerspring mattresses feel more responsive sooner but still benefit from a break-in period. Personal adjustment matters too. If you have been sleeping on a worn, soft mattress for years, a new medium-firm model will feel noticeably different. Some morning stiffness during the first few weeks is normal and does not mean the mattress is wrong for you. How Long Does It Take to Break In a New Mattress? Most mattresses settle within 30 to 90 days of consistent nightly use. Memory foam and high-density hybrid mattresses sit at the longer end of that range. Innerspring models tend to break in within two to four weeks. Latex is the exception; natural latex changes very little from day one. Do your own research based on your mattress type and manufacturer guidelines. Many brands offer trial periods because a mattress's true comfort level is not always apparent in the first week. Step-by-Step Guide to Breaking In a New Mattress Safely 1. Let the Mattress Fully ExpandIf your mattress arrived compressed, give it four to 72 hours before sleeping on it. Lay it flat on a proper base and leave it without bedding during this time. 2. Sleep on It Every NightThere is no substitute for this. Regular body weight is what conditions the materials. Using another bed in between nights sets the process back. 3. Raise Room Temperature SlightlyMemory foam softens with warmth. A couple of degrees above your normal room temperature is enough. Worth keeping in mind during winter months. 4. Rotate the Mattress RegularlyTurn it 180 degrees every two to four weeks. This keeps the wear even across the surface. Only flip it if the manufacturer says it is double-sided. 5. Use It During the DaySit on it, rest on it. Any time spent on the mattress outside of sleep counts toward the break-in. 6. Add a Topper if NeededStill too firm after the break-in period? A mattress topper adds cushioning without swapping out the mattress. What You Should Never Do to Soften a Mattress Jumping on it puts sudden, uneven force on the foam or pocket springs. The materials need gradual pressure, not impact. Heating pads or electric blankets placed directly on memory foam can break down the foam cells and void your warranty. A warmer room is fine; direct heat on the surface is not. Heavy objects placed in one spot to force the foam down will leave permanent indentations. Uneven compression from this kind of pressure does not correct itself over time. Can You Speed Up the Break-In Process? To a point, yes. Sleeping on it every night, using it during the day, keeping the room slightly warm, and rotating it regularly all help move things along. These are the only methods worth trying. One thing that cannot be hurried is your body's own adjustment. Your muscles and sleep posture need time to adapt to new support, even after the mattress has settled. That is a normal part of the process, not a problem with the mattress. Myth vs. Fact Myth Fact Jumping softens a mattress faster It may damage internal materials Heating the mattress works Excessive heat may damage foam Heavy weights help Can create uneven wear Every mattress softens dramatically Most soften only slightly Firm means uncomfortable Firmness and support are different Quick Answers: New Mattress Break-In at a Glance Question Quick Answer How long does break-in take? Usually 30 to 90 days depending on mattress type Can I speed it up? Only with safe methods like regular use Should I walk on it? Only gently and only if the manufacturer recommends it Is initial soreness normal? Yes, for many sleepers Should I flip the mattress? Only if designed to be double-sided Still unsure? Mattress Buying Guide NZ: How to Choose the Right Mattress.

Buying Guide · Mattresses · NZ Edition Sizes, spring types, firmness, and what actually lasts in a Kiwi home. Plain answers from the TSB Living team, for buying online with confidence. You'll spend a third of the next eight to ten years on this decision. Twenty minutes of reading is a fair trade. If you only read one section Buying a mattress? Get these four right. Most people shop mattresses by price and a vague sense of "firm or soft". These four decisions, in this order, are what you'll actually live with. Use them as your checklist; the chapters below cover the rest, including the NZ-homes advice global reviews never do. Size by the room, then the sleepers. A Queen (153 × 203 cm) needs walking space on both sides. Measure before you fall for a Super King. Type by how you sleep. Side sleepers want a softer comfort layer (foam or Euro top). Back and stomach sleepers want firmer spring support. Couples: springs that move independently. Pocket springs or foam absorb a partner's movement. Connected Bonnell coils pass it straight across. Budget honestly. A kids' or spare bed is solved for under $300. Our most-bought adult Queens sit between $240 and $500. Above that you're buying comfort layers, not necessity. Choosing a mattress comes down to three decisions, in order: the size your room can take, the construction that suits how you sleep, and the firmness your body needs. In New Zealand that means picking from the local size ladder (Single through Super King, including the King Single most countries don't have), then choosing between Bonnell spring, pocket spring, foam, and Euro top builds. For most Kiwi couples, a medium-firm Queen pocket spring or Euro top is the safe answer. For kids and spare rooms, a firmer single under $300 does the job well. Buying online means you can't lie on the bed first, and that worries people more than it should. The specs tell you nearly everything once you know how to read them: coil type tells you about partner disturbance, comfort layers tell you about pressure relief, and firmness ratings only mean something relative to your weight and sleeping position. This guide translates each spec into a plain answer, grounded in what we actually stock and ship across New Zealand. Each chapter starts with its answer in the first line, so skim the bold text and you'll know enough to choose. In this guide Which mattress type is best? (Bonnell, pocket spring, foam, Euro top.) For most adult beds, a pocket spring or Euro top mattress is the best all-rounder; Bonnell spring is the budget workhorse; foam suits side sleepers and kids' rooms. The names describe what's inside, and what's inside decides how it feels, how it handles two sleepers, and how long it lasts. Every mattress is a support core (springs or dense foam) with comfort layers on top. The four builds below cover nearly everything sold in New Zealand. None of them is "best"; each one is best for somebody. The Four Mattress Builds What's inside each mattress type 🛏️ Bonnell Spring Connected Coils Firm, durable and budget-friendly. The springs are linked together, providing solid support, though movement can travel across the mattress. 🌀 Pocket Spring Independent Coils Each spring moves independently for improved body contouring, targeted support and reduced partner disturbance during the night. ☁️ Foam & Gel Layered Comfort No springs inside. Multiple foam and gel layers provide excellent pressure relief, quieter sleep and cooler comfort. ✨ Euro Top Spring + Plush Layer A supportive spring core combined with a permanently stitched plush top layer for extra cushioning without sacrificing support. 💤 Biggest Mattress Range at TSB Living The support core keeps your spine aligned, while the comfort layers determine how your mattress feels when you lie down. Choose the right support system for your sleeping position, then pick the comfort layer that matches your preferred feel. Bonnell spring: the budget workhorse Bonnell coils are connected in one lattice, which makes them cheap to build, firm underfoot, and very hard to wear out. The trade-off is that the whole surface moves together: roll over and your partner knows about it. For a kids' bed, a flat, a rental, or a spare room, Bonnell is the sensible money. Pocket spring: support that moves one sleeper at a time Each coil sits in its own fabric pocket and compresses independently. The mattress contours to shoulders and hips instead of bridging across them, and movement stays on its own side of the bed. If you share a bed, start here; our X20 range makes pocket springs the budget option too. For a deeper comparison, read our memory foam vs pocket spring guide. Foam and gel: quiet, contouring, great for side sleepers Foam mattresses have no springs to feel through, which makes them silent and forgiving on pressure points. Plain memory foam holds heat; gel-infused layers exist to offset that. Dense foam cores also make excellent firmer kids' mattresses. The thing foam will not give you is that springy push-back some sleepers miss. Euro top: the comfortable middle of the market A Euro top is a spring mattress with a thick cushion layer sewn flush under the cover, so you get spring support with a soft landing. It is the biggest part of our mattress range for a reason: it suits the widest spread of sleepers without committing you to full foam softness or bare spring firmness. Latex: the natural option, when you can find it Latex is springy, breathable, and long-lived, and it tends to cost more per centimetre of comfort. In our range it appears as a 30cm Euro top single. Worth considering for a single sleeper who runs hot and dislikes the memory-foam "sink" feeling. Chapter 02 Our Ranges Which TSB mattress range is right for you? (X20, Euro Top, GEL30, decoded.) Our range names describe the build: X20 is the 20cm pocket spring, PIL20 Euro tops add the sewn cushion layer, GEL30 is a gel-infused memory foam Euro top, and Bonnell is the firm budget spring. Here is the whole catalogue translated into one honest table, so the product pages make sense before you open them. Range Build Feel Best for From Bonnell Connected coil, 10–21cm depths Firm Kids, flats, spare rooms $125 Xclusive X20 Pocket spring, 20cm profile Medium Budget all-rounder, first flat $155 Euro Top PIL20 Spring + sewn pillow top Medium Couples, everyday adult beds $209 Latex 30cm Euro top latex Springy, breathable Hot sleepers, foam-sink haters $289 GEL30 Memory foam Euro top, gel-infused Medium-soft contour Side sleepers who run warm $299 3 Way Three foam layers, cool gel top Layered foam contour Foam comfort without springs $319 Prices are starting points by size as at June 2026 and move with promotions; the product page is always the current truth. Two practical notes: some PIL20 listings bundle pillows (the title says so), and the X20, our single most-bought mattress, is a pocket spring at a Bonnell-like price, which is most of why it tops the sales chart. What people actually buy · our best-selling mattresses #1 best seller Xclusive X20 Pocket Spring · Queen $239 · 20cm profile #2 best seller Bonnell Bon21 · Queen $314 · 3cm pillow top #3 best seller Bonnell Bon10 · Single $125 · kids & spare rooms Best-selling foam build 3 Way Mattress · Queen $499 · cool gel top layer Ranked by store sales. For couples, Queen (153 × 203 cm) is the NZ default; for a single adult, King Single is the upgrade worth knowing about; for kids moving out of a cot, Single is standard. Sizes below are standard NZ dimensions; always check the listed dimensions on the product page, as they are the ground truth for the mattress you're buying. The NZ Size Ladder Every NZ size, drawn to the same scale Single King Single Double Queen King Super King Single Kids' Rooms 91 × 188 cm The standard first big-kid bed and bunk size. A Long Single (91 × 203 cm) adds 15cm for tall teens. Same scale, honest proportions. Notice the length step: Single and Double stop at 188cm, everything from King Single up runs 203cm. Centimetres are standard NZ sizing; the product page dimensions are final. The room decides before you do. Leave at least 60cm of walking space on each open side of the bed, and remember the mattress has to get there: stairwells and tight hall corners are where Super King ambitions go to die. If you're between sizes for a couple, take the bigger one; nobody has ever complained about too much bed width. One NZ quirk worth knowing: Double and Single share the same 188cm length, while everything from King Single up runs 203cm. Taller than about 180cm? Stay in the 203cm club. Two sizes off the standard ladder that we also stock: Baby Cot mattresses for the nursery stage (check your cot's internal dimensions before ordering, as cot sizing varies more than bed sizing), and California King, a longer, slightly narrower take on King that occasionally appears in our range for very tall sleepers. If a listing shows either, the product page dimensions are the ones to trust. Buy the size the room can breathe around, not the biggest bed that technically fits. TSB Living Team Chapter 04 Firmness How firm should a mattress be? (By sleeping position and weight.) Side sleepers generally do best on medium to medium-soft; back sleepers on medium-firm; stomach sleepers on firm. Body weight shifts the answer: lighter sleepers sink less, so they should aim a step softer, and heavier sleepers a step firmer. "Firmness" has no universal scale, which is why position and weight beat marketing labels. The goal is the same for everyone: a spine that stays in its natural line all night. Whatever your position, the test below is what good support looks like. For a deeper dive by position, read our guide to the best mattress for your sleeping position. The Alignment Test Three quick checks while lying in your normal sleeping position 1 Neck in Line Your head shouldn't tilt up or sag down. If it does, the pillow is wrong before the mattress is. 2 Shoulder Sinks Slightly On your side, the shoulder should settle into the comfort layer rather than prop you up. Pressure here means too firm. 3 Hips Level, Not Hammocked Hips dipping below the line means too soft; hips perched above it means too firm. Level is the win. ✓ A good firmness match keeps your spine in a straight, natural line from your neck to your hips, without creating pressure points. Two sleepers, two answers? Split the difference toward the lighter sleeper's preference (the heavier sleeper compresses any mattress more, effectively softening it for them), or pick a pocket spring or Euro top whose comfort layer does the personalising. Our couples' mattress guide covers the negotiation in detail. Heavier and lighter sleepers: shift the scale Firmness labels assume an average-weight sleeper, roughly 60 to 90kg. Outside that band, adjust deliberately. Lighter sleepers (under about 60kg) barely compress firm comfort layers, so a "medium" can behave like a board for them; aim a step softer than your position suggests. Heavier sleepers (over about 100kg) sink further into everything, so a step firmer restores the support the label promised, and a thicker mattress with a robust spring core will hold its shape for more years. Couples with a big weight difference get the most from pocket springs, where each side responds to its own occupant. Chapter 05 NZ Homes What works in NZ homes: damp, cold, and airflow. In a typical NZ bedroom the mattress needs airflow underneath more than anything else. Cooler, damper rooms slow the overnight moisture every sleeper releases from drying out of the mattress. The fixes are structural and cheap: a slatted base or ventilated foundation, a weekly airing habit, and not parking the bed hard against a cold external wall. This is the chapter global mattress reviews skip, because they assume centrally heated houses. Plenty of NZ bedrooms spend winter cold and a bit damp, and a mattress in that room lives a harder life. Slats or solid base? Slats win on airflow and are the default recommendation for NZ conditions; a solid or padded base gives a slightly firmer, more uniform feel but traps more moisture beneath the mattress. If you go solid, airing matters more. We've written a full comparison in bed base vs slats for NZ bedrooms; the short version is that either works if you manage airflow, and slats forgive laziness better. Under the Mattress Why slats are the NZ default SLATTED AIR MOVES ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ Allows natural airflow beneath the mattress. Helps moisture dry more quickly. Popular in many New Zealand homes. ↔ SOLID MOISTURE LINGERS 💧 💧 💧 💧 Provides full, continuous support. Less airflow underneath the mattress. Regular airing helps manage overnight moisture. Every sleeper releases moisture overnight. Gaps between slats allow air to circulate and help the underside of the mattress dry naturally. With a solid base, airflow is more limited, so regularly standing the mattress on its side to air can help keep it fresh. Foam in cold rooms Memory foam firms up in the cold. In an unheated winter bedroom a foam mattress can feel a grade firmer than it did in the warm shop video you watched. It softens again with body heat within minutes; just don't judge it on the first cold-night impression. Mattresses-in-a-box are normal now Most foam and many spring mattresses ship compressed and rolled, which is why a Queen arrives at your door in a box a person can shift. Give it a few hours to take shape and a day or two to lose the new smell in a ventilated room. The full unboxing rundown is in mattress in a box, explained. Editor's Note · NZ Winters The cheapest mattress insurance in New Zealand is a habit: once a week, pull the duvet right back, open the window, and let the bed air for an hour. Moisture is the thing that ages a mattress fastest here, and an hour of airflow undoes a week of it. Chapter 06 Which to Buy Which mattress should you buy? (Best for your situation.) TSB Living Team Chapter 07 Care Making a mattress last (the five-minute habits.) Three habits decide whether a mattress lasts: rotate it, air it, and protect it. None takes more than five minutes, and together they're the difference between a mattress that's done at year five and one still going strong at year ten. Rotate head-to-toe every couple of months for the first year, then seasonally, so body impressions spread evenly instead of digging two permanent hollows. (Modern one-sided mattresses rotate; they don't flip.) Air the bed weekly as covered in chapter 5. And put a washable protector on from day one: sweat and spills age foam and fabric faster than use does, and a protector is the cheapest part of the whole setup to replace. The Ownership Timeline A decade of mattress, five minutes at a time 🛡️ DAY 1 Protector On Start protecting your mattress from spills, dust and everyday wear. 🔄 YEAR 1 Rotate Every 2–3 Months Build a simple rotation routine to encourage even comfort and support. 🌤️ YEARS 2–7 Seasonal Rotate Rotate with the seasons and air the mattress regularly to help keep it fresh. 🔍 YEAR 5 Mid-Life Sag Check Check for body impressions and confirm your mattress is still providing the support you need. 🛏️ YEARS 8–10 Replacement Window Many quality mattresses reach the point where replacement becomes worth considering. The habits are front-loaded. A protector on day one and a regular rotation routine during the first year help set up the quieter middle years. Continue seasonal rotation and airing throughout ownership, and by years 8–10 it's worth assessing whether your mattress still provides the comfort and support you expect. When a mattress does reach the end (visible sag that airing and rotating don't fix, springs you can feel, or waking sore in a bed that used to be fine), replace it rather than nursing it. And when you move house, move it properly: our guide to moving and storing a mattress saves more mattresses than any care tip here. Chapter 08 Complete the Bed What else you need: 6 things people forget. The mattress is half the bed. These six finish the job, and most of them get remembered a fortnight after the mattress arrives. 01 Bed base The right base adds years to a mattress. Slatted bases win on airflow in NZ rooms; whatever you choose, match it to the mattress size exactly. Shop bed bases → 02 Bed frame Gets the mattress off the floor and the airflow underneath it. Check the frame's slat spacing suits your mattress type before buying. Shop bed frames → 03 Pillows The neck's share of spinal alignment. Shop beds → 06 Tallboy Spare bedding needs a dry home; linen stored damp defeats every airing habit. A tallboy keeps the winter layers ready without eating floor space. Shop tallboys → Chapter 09 FAQ Quick answers to the questions customers ask us most. What size mattress should a couple get in NZ? Queen (153 × 203 cm) is the NZ standard for couples and fits most main bedrooms with room to walk. Upgrade to King or Super King only if the room is 3.5 metres wide or more. A Double suits couples only in genuinely small rooms; it's snug for two adults. What's the difference between Bonnell and pocket springs? Bonnell coils are wired together, so the surface moves as one and costs less; pocket springs sit in individual fabric pockets, so each coil compresses alone. Pocket springs contour better and stop a partner's movement travelling across the bed. Bonnell remains the durable budget choice for kids and spare rooms. Is memory foam too hot to sleep on? Plain memory foam holds more heat than springs because air can't circulate through it. Gel-infused foam layers and breathable covers offset most of that, and spring-plus-foam hybrids like Euro tops split the difference. If you already run hot, choose a spring build or gel foam and use cotton bedding. What firmness should I choose? Match it to your sleeping position first: side sleepers suit medium to medium-soft, back sleepers medium-firm, stomach sleepers firm. Then adjust for weight, softer if you're lighter, firmer if you're heavier. The test that matters: lying in your normal position, your spine should stay in a straight, natural line. How much should I spend on a mattress in NZ? In our range, kids' and spare-room singles start at about $125. Everyday adult Queens run from about $220 to $930, with the most-bought models between $240 and $500, and the very top reaches about $1,080. Spend at the level the bed gets used: nightly adult beds deserve the middle tier. How long does a mattress last? A quality mattress used nightly is typically good for eight to ten years; budget builds and guest beds vary either side of that. Replace when you see sag that rotating doesn't fix, feel individual springs, or consistently wake sore. Rotating, airing, and a washable protector stretch the lifespan meaningfully. Do I need a bed base, or do slats work? Either works when matched to the mattress, but slats are the better default in NZ bedrooms because they ventilate the underside, which fights our damp winters. Keep slat gaps modest so foam mattresses stay supported evenly. A solid base feels slightly firmer and needs a more disciplined airing habit. What size is a King Single, and who is it for? A King Single is 107 × 203 cm: wider and 15 cm longer than a standard Single. It's the best single-sleeper size in NZ, ideal for teenagers, tall adults, and guest rooms that host one person. If a kid's room has the space, it's the upgrade that lasts through high school. Does body weight change which mattress I should buy? Yes. Firmness labels assume an average-weight sleeper, roughly 60 to 90kg. Lighter sleepers compress less, so choose a step softer than your position suggests; heavier sleepers should go a step firmer, with a thicker spring core for durability. Couples with a big weight difference do best on pocket springs. Keep exploring Related guides More from the TSB Living team. Best Mattress for Elderly in NZ: Complete Buying Guide for Better Sleep

Sleep problems are one of the most common complaints among adults over 60, and yet the mattress rarely gets the blame it deserves. Aching joints, restless nights, waking at 3 am for no clear reason, these things are often brushed off as just part of getting older. Sometimes they are. But a mattress that's sagging in the middle, too firm for ageing joints, or trapping heat all night is going to make every one of those problems worse. If you're shopping for yourself or trying to find something better for a parent, this guide will help you cut through the noise and make a decision that actually improves sleep. Common Sleep Challenges for Elderly People It helps to start with the specific problems, because the right mattress addresses different needs for different people. Sleep Challenge How It Affects Sleep Arthritis Inflamed joints need cushioning. A mattress that pushes back too hard against the hips, shoulders, or knees will cause pain throughout the night. Back pain Ageing spines need consistent support. Without it, muscles overcompensate, and you wake up stiff and sore. Hip pain Side sleepers take the brunt of this. A mattress that's too firm puts direct pressure on the hip joint with nowhere for it to go. Poor circulation Pressure points on a too-firm surface restrict blood flow. That pins-and-needles feeling at night is often the mattress, not a health issue. Night sweats Temperature regulation becomes less efficient with age. A mattress that traps heat makes this significantly worse. What Makes the Best Mattress for Seniors? Not every mattress brand talks about these features plainly, so here's what actually matters and why. Pressure Relief This is the big one. Pressure relief means the mattress gives way where the body is heaviest, hips, shoulders, and lower back, so those areas aren't grinding against a hard surface all night. For anyone with arthritis or joint pain, this isn't a luxury feature. It's essential. Proper Spinal Alignment Too soft and the spine sags. Too firm and it can't follow its natural curve. Neither is good. What you want is a mattress that supports the spine in a neutral position so the back muscles can actually relax overnight instead of working to compensate. Strong Edge Support This matters far more for older sleepers than younger ones. If the edges compress when you sit on them, getting up becomes awkward and unstable. Good edge support gives you a firm, reliable surface to push off from and also means you can use the full width of the mattress without feeling like you might roll off. Temperature Regulation Older adults tend to sleep warmer, and a mattress that traps body heat compounds the problem. Materials like pocket springs, latex, and open-cell foam allow air to move through the mattress and keep the sleep surface cooler. Durability A mattress that starts sagging after three years defeats the purpose. For elderly sleepers especially, a mattress that loses its support over time gradually undoes all the benefits you bought it for. Which Mattress Type is Best for Elderly People? Pocket Spring Mattress Each coil moves on its own, so when your hip sinks in, your shoulder doesn't have to follow. That independence is what makes them good for people who carry their weight unevenly or sleep in one position all night. Pros: Great spinal support, breathable, easy to move on, built to last Cons: Can feel too firm if the comfort layer is thin, not great at absorbing a partner's movement Best for: Seniors who tend to sleep hot, need reliable back support, or have always preferred a traditional spring mattress Memory Foam Mattress Memory foam wraps around you rather than pushing back. That might sound like a good thing, and for painful joints, it often is, but it also means you can feel a bit stuck when you try to roll over.  Pros: Takes pressure off sore joints, barely transfers movement, good for hip and shoulder pain Cons: Holds onto heat, responds slowly, so turning over takes more effort, can feel low and hard to get out of Best for: Seniors whose main issue is joint pain and who don't run hot at night Latex Mattress Latex gives you the cushioning of foam without the stuck-in-quicksand feeling. It pushes back a little, which makes moving around at night much easier, and it doesn't trap heat the way dense foam does. Pros: Breathable, easy to move on, very durable, naturally hypoallergenic  Cons: Heavy, harder to handle, more expensive, not suitable for those with latex allergies  Best for: Seniors who want pressure relief without the sinking feeling of foam, and who sleep warm Hybrid Mattress A coil base topped with foam or latex comfort layers. Covers more ground than any single-material mattress. Pros: Good balance of support and cushioning, breathable, strong edges, works for most sleep positions  Cons: Pricier, quality varies considerably between brands  Best for: Most elderly sleepers. If you're not sure what to get, a good hybrid is usually the safest choice. Bonnell Spring Mattress The traditional interconnected spring design. Still widely available and the most affordable option. Pros: Budget-friendly, firm, good airflow  Cons: Springs are linked, so movement transfers across the whole mattress, less pressure relief, can squeak and sag over time  Best for: Seniors on a tight budget who sleep alone and prefer a firmer surface Better Sleep Starts With the Right Choice The right mattress won't fix everything, but it removes one of the most correctable barriers to good sleep. Once support, pressure relief, and temperature are sorted, a lot of other sleep problems improve on their own. One practical thing worth checking before you buy: mattress height. For elderly sleepers, somewhere between 25 and 35 cm works best. High enough to sit down and stand up without strain, but not so high that getting into bed becomes its own challenge. Pair it with the right bed base and make sure the combined height works for the person using it. Not sure where to start? • Soft vs Medium vs Firm Mattress in NZ: Which Firmness Is Right for You?

Soft vs Medium vs Firm Mattress in NZ: Which Firmness Is Right for You?

What if the mattress you've been sleeping on is the reason you wake up tired? Most people blame their schedule, their stress, or the neighbor's dog. Rarely do they look at the thing they're lying on for eight hours a night. Mattress firmness has a direct impact on spinal alignment, pressure relief, and how rested you feel come morning. Getting it wrong is easy. Getting it right, once you know what to look for, is straightforward. Here's what you actually need to know before you buy. What Does Mattress Firmness Actually Mean? Mattress firmness refers to how soft or hard the surface feels the moment you lie down. It is the initial resistance your body experiences, not how well the mattress supports your spine over the course of the night. That distinction matters more than most people realize. There is no universal industry standard for the mattress firmness scale. One brand's "medium" might feel like another brand's "firm." Most manufacturers use a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is the plushest and 10 is the hardest. Terms like "luxury plush," "cushion firm," or "ultra firm" are marketing labels, and they vary widely between brands. What you should focus on instead is how a mattress interacts with your specific body weight, sleeping position, and physical needs. Firmness is personal. That is where the real decision lies. Soft vs Medium vs Firm Mattress Comparison Feature Soft (1-3) Medium (4-6) Firm (7-10) Surface Feel Plush, deep sink Balanced give and support Minimal sink, rigid surface Best For Side sleepers, lightweight bodies Combination sleepers, couples Stomach sleepers, heavier bodies Pressure Relief High Moderate Low Spinal Support Depends on the base layer Good for most Excellent for back/stomach Motion Transfer Higher Moderate Lower Durability Can soften faster Stable over time Longest lasting feel Which Mattress Firmness Is Best for Your Sleeping Position? Here is the most practical question to ask yourself before shopping: What position do you spend most of the night in? Your sleep position places pressure on specific areas of your body, and the right firmness should relieve that pressure without letting your spine fall out of alignment. Side sleepers tend to do best on soft to medium mattresses. In this position, the shoulders and hips take the brunt of your body weight. If the mattress is too firm to allow any give at those points, pressure builds up fast, and you'll feel it by morning. Back sleepers typically benefit from medium to medium-firm mattresses. Body weight spreads out more evenly in this position, which takes some pressure off the mattress. That said, the lower back still needs enough support to stay in its natural curve rather than flattening against the surface. Stomach sleepers generally require a firm mattress. When the hips sink too far into a soft surface, the lower back arches unnaturally, and pain follows quickly. Mattress Materials and How They Affect Firmness Material How It Affects Firmness Memory Foam Tends to feel progressively softer the longer you lie on it; a rated medium can feel like a soft within minutes Latex Feels firmer in practice than its rating suggests; holds its shape rather than conforming deeply Innerspring Coil count and gauge directly determine firmness; they can feel inconsistent across the surface Hybrid Offers better pressure relief than pure innerspring while maintaining stronger support than all-foam Signs Your Mattress Is Too Soft A mattress that is too soft might seem like a luxury at first, but the signs of a poor fit show up fast. You wake up with lower back pain or stiffness that eases after you get up and move around. Your hips sink deeper than your shoulders, causing your spine to curve downward. Changing positions takes real effort. You feel like you are working against the mattress rather than moving freely. Visible sagging or a body impression that stays even after you get up is a clear sign the material has broken down. Sleeping hot is common when you sink too deep into a firm memory foam mattress, as the material surrounds your body and traps heat through the night. Signs Your Mattress Is Too Firm On the opposite end, a mattress that is too hard creates a different set of problems. You wake up with pain or numbness in the shoulders, hips, or knees, particularly if you are a side sleeper. A gap under your lower back when lying flat means the mattress is not following the curve of your spine. That unsupported space leads to tension and aching over time. Frequent position changes through the night usually mean your body is searching for relief it is not finding. The mattress feels like it is working against your body shape rather than accommodating it. There is no real give at the contact points. You feel unrested in the morning despite getting enough hours of sleep. Medium Firm Mattresses: Why They're the Most Popular Choice Walk into any mattress store, and medium firm is the firmness level most people end up leaving with. That is not a coincidence. Rated roughly 5 to 6 out of 10, medium firm hits a balance that works across a wider range of body types and sleep positions than soft or firm can manage on their own. There is enough give at the surface to take pressure off the shoulders and hips, and enough resistance underneath to keep the spine from dropping out of alignment. It is also the safest compromise for couples who have different sleeping positions or moderate weight differences. Rather than one person getting exactly what they need and the other settling, a medium-firm queen mattress tends to work reasonably well for both. At TSB Living, we carry a curated range of mattresses across all firmness levels. Browse our collection and filter by firmness to find the right match for your sleep style.

  • Bonnell Spring vs Pocket Spring Mattress NZ: Which One Should You Buy?

Bonnell Spring vs Pocket Spring Mattress NZ: Which One Should You Buy?

Most mattress advice in New Zealand starts with firmness. Soft, medium, or firm. But firmness is a surface-level detail. What actually determines how a mattress performs night after night is the spring system underneath. Bonnell springs and pocket springs are built on entirely different principles, and that difference ripples through everything from spinal support to how much you feel your partner roll over at 2 am. If you have been choosing mattresses based on how they feel in a showroom, you may have been missing the bigger picture entirely. Here is what to look for instead. What Is a Bonnell Spring Mattress? A Bonnell spring mattress is built around a network of hourglass-shaped metal coils, wider at the top and bottom and narrower through the middle. Bonnell spring mattresses use hourglass-shaped metal coils connected by a wire frame, forming one spring unit that works together. The shape of each coil is wider at the top and bottom and narrower through the middle. Key features: Hourglass coils that give a firm, springy feel A long-standing innerspring design used across homes for decades Weight spreads across the surface through the linked coil network Firm and bouncy underfoot, a feel many sleepers actively prefer Good airflow through the open coil structure, cooler than most foam options Think of it like a trampoline. When one area compresses, the movement ripples across the whole surface. That's a useful image for understanding both the bounce and the motion transfer that comes with a Bonnell design. What Is a Pocket Spring Mattress? A pocket spring mattress takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of joining all the springs together, each coil is wrapped individually in its own fabric pocket. The springs stand side by side but operate independently. Key characteristics include: Each spring is individually wrapped and responds only to the pressure placed directly on it The mattress adapts to your body's shape rather than pushing back with equal force across the surface Shoulders, hips, and lower back receive more tailored cushioning Spinal alignment is better maintained because the mattress responds to varying pressure levels across your body Movement in one area stays contained, so a restless partner is far less likely to disturb your side of the bed. That's the key advantage, particularly for couples. Bonnell Spring vs Pocket Spring Mattress: Side-by-Side Comparison Feature Bonnell Spring Pocket Spring Coil Design Interconnected hourglass coils Individually wrapped coils Feel Firm and bouncy Adaptive and contouring Motion Transfer Higher Lower Pressure Relief Basic Better Spinal Support Even but less precise More targeted Partner Disturbance More noticeable Minimal Airflow Excellent Good Durability Moderate Good to very good Construction and Coil Design Bonnell coils are tied together with helical wires, creating a unified support layer. Pocket springs are individually encased, so the coil count and casing quality matter significantly. A higher pocket spring count generally means finer, more precise support. Comfort and Pressure Relief Pocket springs win here. Because each coil moves independently, pocket springs cushion pressure points like the hips and shoulders without letting the body sink unevenly. Bonnell springs distribute weight more uniformly across the surface but offer less targeted relief at key contact points. Support and Spinal Alignment A pocket spring mattress follows the natural curve of your spine more closely than a Bonnell system does. Bonnell mattresses provide solid, consistent support but may feel too firm or too flat for sleepers who need more give in specific areas. Motion Isolation This is where the two diverge most sharply. Bonnell springs are connected, so movement travels across the whole surface. Pocket springs contain movement to the area where it occurs, making them far better for people who share a bed. Durability and Lifespan A well-made pocket spring mattress tends to hold its shape longer because the springs bear load individually rather than as a unit. Bonnell queen-size mattress can develop uneven wear when certain coils carry more weight over time. That said, build quality, foam layers, and the base underneath all play a role in how long either mattress lasts. Temperature Regulation and Breathability Spring mattresses generally sleep cooler than foam because air moves through the coil layer rather than getting trapped. Bonnell mattresses have an open coil structure that allows particularly good airflow. A pocket spring king-size mattress also stays cool, more so when the cover fabric is breathable or there is a light comfort layer on top. For anyone who runs warm at night, the cover material and top layers deserve just as much attention as the spring type itself. Which Mattress Is Best for Different Sleepers? Sleeper Type Best Choice Why Side Sleepers Pocket Spring Conforms to the curve of the hips and shoulders, relieving pressure at key contact points Back Sleepers Either (lean Bonnell) Bonnell's even, firm surface supports the natural curve of the lower back well; pocket spring works too if you prefer a softer feel Stomach Sleepers Bonnell Spring The firmer, flatter surface prevents the hips from sinking too deep, keeping the spine in a safer position Combination Sleepers Pocket Spring Independent coils adjust quickly as you shift positions throughout the night Couples Pocket Spring Significantly reduces motion transfer so one partner's movement does not disturb the other Children Bonnell Spring Durable, affordable, and firm enough to support growing bodies during lighter use Guest Rooms Bonnell Spring Cost-effective for occasional use where advanced support features are not a priority How to Choose Between a Bonnell and Pocket Spring Mattress? Ask yourself these questions before deciding on a Bonnell Spring vs. a Pocket Spring Mattress: Who will sleep on it? If it's a couple, lean toward a pocket spring. If it's a single sleeper, guest, or child, Bonnell may serve just as well. How often will it be used? Daily sleepers benefit from the better support and durability of the pocket spring. Guest rooms can get by comfortably on Bonnell. What is your sleep position? Side sleepers need the pressure relief of a pocket spring. Back and stomach sleepers may actually prefer the firmer feel of Bonnell. What is your budget? If cost is a key factor, Bonell delivers solid value for light-to-moderate use. Are you a hot sleeper? Both spring types offer decent airflow, but check the foam and cover layers for additional breathability. Looking for a spring mattress that suits the New Zealand climate and your sleep needs? • Mattress Moving & Storage Guide: Do It the Right Way

Mattress Moving & Storage Guide: Do It the Right Way

Most mattresses do not get ruined by years of use. They get ruined in a single move. One unprotected trip in a truck, one damp storage unit, one wrong position, and a perfectly good mattress is warped, moldy, or permanently compressed? Whether you are relocating across town or tucking a spare bed away for months, the way you handle your mattress makes a lasting difference in how long it performs and how well you sleep on it later. This guide walks you through everything you need to know, from how to pack a mattress for moving to how to store a mattress long term, so you do not end up with a warped, moldy, or permanently damaged bed. How to Pack a Mattress for Moving? Packing a mattress sounds simple until you show up at your new place with a dirty, torn, or damp bed. Get this part right, and the rest of the move takes care of itself. Step 1: Get the Right Mattress Packing Cover Pick up a mattress bag before anything else. It is basically a thick plastic or fabric sleeve that fully encloses your mattress and keeps out dust, moisture, bedbugs, and the general chaos of a moving truck. Sizes vary, so grab one that actually fits yours. Step 2: Clean It Before You Seal It Give the mattress a good vacuum, sort out any stains, and then let it breathe for a bit. This step gets skipped more than it should. Sealing in even a little moisture is enough to start a mold problem, and you will not notice it until it is too late. Step 3: Seal It Properly Slide the mattress into the bag, push out as much air as you can, and tape it shut. Some bags have a zip closure, which makes this easier and more secure. Either way, make sure nothing is getting in or out. Step 4: Use a Mattress Box for Extra Protection If you are moving a significant distance, consider slipping the bagged mattress into a flat cardboard mattress box. This adds structural protection, especially at the corners and edges. Best Way to Move a Mattress by Size Not all mattresses move the same way. Size plays a huge role in logistics. Here is a quick reference: Mattress Size Typical Weight Moving Tip Twin 40–45 lbs One person can manage with a dolly Full 50–60 lbs Two people recommended Queen 60–80 lbs Two people plus a hand truck King 130–180 lbs Three people or professional help is strongly advised Storing a Mattress: The Right Way Storing a mattress is where most people go wrong. Here are the steps to follow, whether you are putting it away for a few weeks or several months. Clean It Thoroughly First Before storing a mattress, vacuum it, treat any stains, and let it air dry completely. Any residual moisture sealed inside a storage bag is a recipe for mildew. Wrap It in a Mattress Bag Just like packing for a move, a high-quality mattress packing cover is essential for storage. It keeps out dust mites, moisture, and pests over time. Store It Flat This is the most important storage rule: always store a mattress flat. Keeping it upright on its side for extended periods allows the internal components to shift and sag, particularly in innerspring and hybrid models. Control the Environment The best way to store a mattress involves a climate-controlled storage unit. Extreme heat, cold, and humidity all degrade foam and fabric faster than normal use would. Aim for a consistent, moderate temperature and low humidity. How to Store a Memory Foam Mattress? Memory foam is particularly vulnerable to environmental damage. Unlike innerspring mattresses, foam breaks down faster when exposed to heat, humidity, or uneven pressure during storage. If you are putting one away for a while, here is what actually matters: Store it flat; foam shifts and compresses permanently if left on its side Use a breathable mattress bag so trapped moisture does not turn into mildew Find a climate-controlled spot, ideally away from windows and exterior walls Keep the surface clear; stacking boxes or bags on top will leave lasting impressions The best way to store a mattress topper is to roll it gently (if the material allows), place it in a storage bag or sealed plastic bin, and keep it in a cool, dry location. Avoid compressing it under heavy objects, which can permanently flatten the materials. Memory foam toppers should never be tightly rolled or folded. Quick Reference: Mattress Storage Do's and Don'ts Do Don't Clean before storing Store a damp mattress Use a quality mattress bag Leave it unwrapped Store flat Store on its side long-term Use climate-controlled storage Store in a damp garage or basement Check on it periodically Ignore it for months Keep the storage area dry Place heavy items on top Why Proper Handling Actually Matters? Think about it this way: would you toss a $1,000 investment in the back of a truck without protection? Probably not. Yet that is exactly what happens to mattresses during most moves. Exposure to moisture, dirt, and pressure during transit can break down foam layers, ruin coil systems, and introduce allergens that never fully go away. The good news is that with the right steps, your mattress can come through a move or a long storage period in near-perfect condition.

  • Bed Base vs Slats: Which One Is Better for Your Sleep in NZ?

Bed Base vs Slats: Which One Is Better for Your Sleep in NZ?

When it comes to setting up the perfect bedroom, most people spend a lot of time picking the right mattress or finding a stylish bed frame that suits their space. But one question that often gets overlooked is this: should you go with bed slats or a solid base? It sounds like a small detail, but it can make a real difference to how well you sleep, how long your mattress lasts, and even how much airflow you get through your bed. If you are shopping for a new bed setup in New Zealand, this guide breaks down the slats vs solid bed base debate in plain terms so you can make the right call for your home. What Is a Slatted Bed Base? A slatted bed base is exactly what it sounds like. It is a bed frame where a row of horizontal bars, usually wood or metal, stretches across the width of the frame to hold up your mattress. The gaps between these bars are what make this style different from a solid base. A wood slat bed frame is probably the most common type you will find in NZ homes right now. The airflow that comes from those gaps is a genuine plus, especially in summer when humidity makes sleeping uncomfortable.  Another bonus is that slatted frames tend to be lighter. If you move around a lot or like rearranging your room, that matters more than you think. What Is a Solid Bed Base? A solid base, sometimes called a platform base, is one continuous flat surface under your mattress. No gaps, no bars, just a solid panel of wood or a fabric-wrapped board running the full length and width of the frame. Solid platform beds with no slats give your mattress full contact support across every point of its surface. This is especially important for memory foam, which can perform poorly if parts of it are unsupported or hanging over gaps. A bed frame without slats also tends to be much quieter. There are no individual pieces that can shift or creak over time, which is a small thing until you are woken up at 3 am by a popping slat. Slats vs Solid Bed Base: How Do They Actually Compare? Here is a side-by-side look at the key differences: Feature Slatted Bed Base Solid Bed Base Best Mattress Match Spring, Latex Memory Foam, Foam Airflow Excellent Limited Noise Can creak if low quality Generally quiet Weight Light, easy to move Heavy Durability Good, slats may need replacing Very durable Moisture Control Great, prevents buildup Can trap moisture Box Spring Needed No No Price Generally more affordable Varies, often higher Support and Mattress Compatibility Bed slats pair really well with spring and latex mattresses. These materials have some natural give to them, so a bit of flex underneath actually helps. The issue comes when slats are spaced too far apart. Anything over about 7cm and softer mattresses can start to dip between the gaps, which wrecks the support and shortens the life of your mattress. Solid bases are the better call for foam and memory foam mattresses. These materials need a firm, even platform to do their job properly. Airflow and Temperature This is the area where slatted frames genuinely shine. Air moves through the gaps and keeps things cooler underneath your mattress. For anyone who sleeps hot or lives somewhere humid, this is a real difference you will feel. Solid bases block the airflow completely, which can lead to heat and moisture building up under the mattress over time. Durability A well-made bed frame or any wood furniture will last for years without any trouble. The weak point is individual slats, which can occasionally warp or snap, especially cheaper ones. The upside is that you can usually replace a single slat without replacing the whole frame. Solid bases have fewer moving parts to worry about, but they are heavy and can be a headache to move around. So Which One Should You Go With? Sleep hot or have a spring or latex mattress? Go with a slatted bed frame. It will keep your mattress cooler and give it the flexibility it needs. Use memory foam or prefer a quieter, lower-maintenance setup? A solid platform base is probably the better fit. The right bed base works alongside your mattress, bedside tables, wardrobes, and your overall bedroom furniture to create a sleep environment that feels cohesive and comfortable.

  • How to Choose the Right Mattress for Your Sleeping Style?

How to Choose the Right Mattress for Your Sleeping Style?

Have you ever woken up more tired than when you closed your eyes, and blamed everything except the one thing you were lying on all night? A poor mattress works against you quietly. Night after night, it throws your spine out of alignment, presses into your joints, and cuts short the deep sleep your body needs to recover. By the time the back pain and neck stiffness show up, the damage has already been building for months. Picking a high-quality mattress goes beyond what feels good during a two-minute showroom test. You need to understand your sleeping position, where pressure builds on your body, and what kind of support your spine actually needs. This guide covers all of it. Why Does Your Sleeping Position Matter So Much? Here is something most people never think about: the best mattress position for sleeping is not the same for everyone. The way your body rests through the night decides how much spinal support you need, where pressure collects, and how well your joints hold up by morning. A mattress that works perfectly for one person can be the exact reason someone else wakes up in pain. Before you spend money on a new mattress, ask yourself this: Do you actually know how you sleep? Most people think they sleep in one position but move through several without realising it. Knowing this is the first step toward finding the best mattress for all sleeping positions. Understanding the Three Main Sleep Positions Side Sleepers Side sleeping is the most common position and, for most people, one of the better ones for spinal health. The catch is that your shoulders and hips take on the full weight of your body. Without enough cushioning at those points, you will feel it. The best mattress for side sleeping sits in the medium to medium-soft range, one that follows the natural curve of your body rather than pushing back against it. Memory foam and latex both work well here because they cradle the hips and shoulders while keeping the spine supported. Back Sleepers Back sleeping is generally easy on the spine, but only when the mattress is doing its part. Too soft, and the lower back sags into a position it was never meant to hold. Too firm, and there is a gap between the lumbar region and the surface, which causes its own problems. A medium-firm mattress sits in the right place. It holds the natural curve of the lower back without pressing into it. Stomach Sleepers Stomach sleeping puts more strain on the neck and lower back than any other position. It needs the firmest support. On a soft mattress, the midsection sinks and pulls the spine into an unnatural bend. If stomach sleeping is a habit you cannot shake, the best type of mattress for you is a firm innerspring or hybrid that keeps your body flat and level through the night. Mattress Types: Which One Is Right for You? Mattress Type Best For Firmness Range Key Benefit Memory Foam Side sleepers, pressure relief Soft to Medium Contouring and motion isolation Latex All sleepers, especially hot sleepers Medium to Firm Responsive, breathable, durable Innerspring Stomach and back sleepers Medium-Firm to Firm Strong support, good airflow Hybrid Combination sleepers Medium to Firm Balanced support and comfort Orthopedic Back pain sufferers Firm Targeted lumbar support Not sure which mattress is best for sleeping? No single mattress works for everybody. The right topper or mattress depends on how you sleep, how much you weigh, and how your body feels the morning after. Start there, and the decision gets a lot simpler. What to Look for When Buying a Mattress? Support: The mattress needs to keep your spine aligned, no matter how you sleep. Support is not the same as firmness. A mattress can feel soft on top and still have excellent support built into its base layers. Pressure Relief: Side sleepers feel this the most. Your hips and shoulders press into the mattress all night, and if the surface does not give enough at those points, you will wake up sore. You need cushioning that takes the pressure off without letting your spine fall out of position. Motion Isolation: Sharing a bed means you are not the only one moving around at night. A mattress that absorbs that movement keeps your sleep yours, even when your partner is restless. Temperature Regulation: Foam traps heat, and if you already sleep warm, that becomes a problem fast. A latex or hybrid mattress with breathable layers lets air move through, so you are not waking up overheated at midnight. Durability: A well-made mattress holds up for 7 to 10 years. Before you buy, check the foam density and the quality of the coil system. The Best Mattress by Sleep Position: A Quick Reference Sleep Position Recommended Firmness Best Mattress Type Side Sleeper Soft to Medium Memory Foam, Latex Back Sleeper Medium-Firm Hybrid, Latex Stomach Sleeper Firm Innerspring, Hybrid Combination Sleeper Medium Hybrid, Latex Side and Stomach Sleeper Medium Hybrid, Memory Foam The best type of mattress for side sleepers is memory foam or latex in the medium range. These materials cushion the shoulder and hip without letting the spine drop out of position. For anyone splitting the night between their side and stomach, a medium hybrid gives you the softness where you need it and the structure where it counts. Best Mattress Solutions for Combination Sleepers Do you start on your back, roll to your side, and end up on your stomach by morning? You need a surface that is responsive enough to adjust as you shift, without creating pressure problems in any single position. A medium hybrid with a latex comfort layer handles this better than most. The coils give you enough bounce to reposition naturally, and the latex adapts quickly to wherever you land. Take your time, test before you buy where possible, and make your sleep health the priority it deserves to be. Ready to upgrade your sleep? • Kids Mattress Upgrade Guide NZ: Size, Comfort & Support

Kids Mattress Upgrade Guide NZ: Size, Comfort & Support

If your child is waking up grumpy, restless, or complaining of a sore back, the culprit might be closer than you think, quite literally under them. Most parents are quick to blame late nights or too much screen time, but an old or ill-fitting mattress can quietly rob kids of the deep, restorative sleep they need. In New Zealand, where winters bite, and kids burn serious energy throughout the day, quality sleep isn't a luxury; it's essential. This guide covers everything you need to know about choosing the right mattress for kids in NZ, from size to support to budget. Why Choosing the Right Kids Mattress Matters? Children spend more time sleeping than adults. A school-age child needs 9 to 11 hours a night, which means the mattress they are on accounts for a third of their entire day. Poor support during those years does not just mean bad sleep. It can affect posture, concentration, and mood over time. The good news is that finding the best mattress for kids does not require spending a fortune. It requires knowing what to look for. What Size Mattress Does Your Child Actually Need? This is where most parents either overthink it or get it wrong entirely. The answer is not just about how big your child is now. It is about how long the mattress will last before it needs replacing again. Child's Age Recommended Size NZ Size (approx.) Toddler (2-4) Single / King Single 92 x 188cm 5-9 years King Single or Double 107 x 203cm 10-14 years Double / Full 138 x 188cm Teens (15+) Double or Queen 153 x 203cm A kid's single mattress is the standard starting point for most households. If the budget allows and the bedroom has the space, sizing up to a king single or kids double mattress gives you another three to five years before the next upgrade. Kids grow faster than furniture budgets allow for. Choosing the Right Type: Comfort and Support Explained Not all mattresses support growing bodies the same way. Children need firmer support than adults, particularly in the early years when spines are still developing. A mattress that feels luxuriously soft to a parent can actually put a child's lower back into a compromised position night after night. Here is how the main types compare for kids: Type Best For Pros Watch Out For Innerspring Active kids, hot sleepers Breathable, affordable, bouncy Less motion isolation; wears faster Kids Memory Foam Restless sleepers, joint support Conforms to body, pressure relief Can retain heat; heavier to move Latex Allergies, eco-conscious families Durable, naturally breathable Higher upfront cost Hybrid Most kids (5+) Balance of support and comfort Mid-range price; varies by brand A kid's memory foam mattress works well for children who move around a lot at night, as it absorbs motion and holds its shape. Just make sure it has a medium-firm rating rather than plush, which is too soft for most children under 10. How to Choose a Mattress for a Child: The Checklist Thinking about how to choose a mattress for a child, and not sure where to start? Run through this before you buy: Firmness: Medium-firm for most ages; avoid plush or ultra-soft ratings for children under 12 Size: Buy for the next 4 to 5 years, not just right now Materials: Breathable covers matter in NZ's humidity swings between seasons Certifications: Look for CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX certified foam if choosing a kids' memory foam mattress Trial period: A reputable brand will offer at least 30 nights; 100 is better Washable cover: Non-negotiable for younger children  A kids' bed and mattress package can be a cost-effective option, but check that the mattress itself meets support standards, not just the frame. Budget packages sometimes cut corners on the mattress to make the bundle price look attractive. One Last Thing Before You Buy Upgrading your child's mattress is not a complicated decision once you know the size they need, the support level that suits their age, and the bunk beds that hold up in a home. Match those three things, and you will not go far wrong. The best full-size mattress for kids is the one that fits the room, fits the budget, and keeps them sleeping soundly through the night. That is the only spec that really counts.

  • Electric Blanket on Memory Foam Mattress: Safe or Risky?

Electric Blanket on Memory Foam Mattress: Safe or Risky?

Winter nights in New Zealand have a way of testing even the most committed sleepers. You've invested in a quality memory foam mattress, and now you're eyeing that electric blanket sitting in the cupboard. But before you plug it in and pile on, it's worth asking, can you use an electric blanket on a memory foam mattress without causing damage, or worse, a safety hazard? The short answer is yes, with conditions. The longer answer is what this guide is for. How Memory Foam Responds to Heat? Memory foam is temperature-sensitive by design. That's actually what makes it so comfortable, it softens with your body heat and moulds to your shape. But introduce a direct, sustained external heat source, and things can go sideways. Using a memory foam on an electric blanket setup without care can cause the foam to soften unevenly, break down the cell structure over time, and, in extreme cases, create overheating risks. This doesn't mean electric blankets are off the table; it means how you use them matters enormously. Is It Safe to Use an Electric Blanket on Memory Foam? Yes, but placement is everything. The safest approach is to use the electric blanket on top of your bedsheet, not sandwiched between the mattress and your bedding. Direct, prolonged contact between a heated mattress pad and memory foam can trap heat and degrade the foam faster than normal wear. Setup Safety Level Notes An electric blanket on top of the sheets Safe Best practice for memory foam Electric blanket under fitted sheet Caution Reduces airflow, monitor heat setting Heated mattress pad directly on foam Caution Use low settings only An electric blanket under a mattress topper Risky Traps heat, voids some warranties Can you use an electric blanket with a mattress topper? If your topper is memory foam, the same rules apply: keep the blanket above, not beneath it. What About Heated Mattress Pads? A heated mattress pad on memory foam is a popular alternative to electric blankets, designed to sit beneath your sheets. These tend to distribute heat more evenly and are generally considered safer than loosely laid electric blankets. That said, always check the manufacturer's guidelines for both the pad and your mattress; some memory foam warranties are voided by prolonged heat exposure. Choosing the Right Electric Blanket for a Memory Foam Bed Not all electric blankets are created equal, and pairing the wrong one with your memory foam mattress can cause more harm than good. When shopping for an electric blanket in NZ, prioritise blankets with multiple heat settings, low, medium, and high, so you're never forcing the mattress to absorb more heat than necessary. Sizing is more straightforward than people think. An electric blanket of queen-size should lie flat across the mattress with no folding or doubling over at the edges. If you have a larger bed, a super king electric blanket in NZ is worth the investment simply because a blanket that falls short of the edges pushes all the heat into the centre of the mattress. For memory foam, that kind of concentrated warmth in one spot is the main thing you're trying to avoid. Tips for Safe Use Always use the lowest effective heat setting Never fold or bunch the blanket while in use Turn it off before you fall asleep, or use a timer Check for frayed cords or hot spots regularly Don't use with infants, young children, or people with reduced sensitivity to heat. Getting the Balance Right Memory foam and electric blankets aren't enemies; they just need ground rules. Keep the blanket above your sheets, use low heat settings, and choose a product that's properly sized for your bed. Whether you're after an electric blanket of queen size for a couple or a super king electric blanket in NZ for a larger room, the right choice used the right way will keep you warm without working against the mattress you've invested in. A few small habits go a long way toward protecting both your sleep quality and your mattress for years to come.

Hypoallergenic Mattress Guide: Materials, Benefits, and What to Avoid

Have you ever considered that your bedroom could be the biggest source of your allergy triggers? Most people blame pollen, pets, or seasonal changes when symptoms flare up. The mattress rarely gets examined. But a standard mattress can harbour millions of dust mites, accumulate dead skin cells, trap moisture, and release chemical irritants, all while you sleep on it for eight hours a night. If you wake up congested, itchy, or with irritated eyes, your sleep surface is worth a serious look. A hypoallergenic mattress is built to reduce exactly that. This guide covers what makes a mattress genuinely allergy-friendly, which materials to prioritise, and what to steer clear of. What Makes a Mattress Hypoallergenic? The term hypoallergenic does not mean allergy-proof. It means the mattress uses materials that are less likely to trigger a reaction. A genuine allergy-free mattress tends to share a few traits: it resists dust mites, does not retain moisture, uses low or zero-VOC materials, and has a tightly woven or sealed cover that stops allergens from working their way inside. Certifications are worth checking. OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GOLS (for organic latex), and GOTS (for organic textiles) are independently verified standards, not marketing claims. They confirm that the materials have been tested for harmful substances and allergen risk. Materials That Work, and Materials That Do Not Not all natural materials are allergy-friendly, and not all synthetic ones are harmful. The difference is in the detail. Material Allergy-Friendly? Why It Works Natural Latex Yes Naturally resistant to dust mites and mould Dense Memory Foam Yes Inhospitable structure for dust mites Organic Cotton Cover Yes Breathable and chemical-free Wool Yes Wicks moisture, inhibits dust mite growth Innerspring / Coil Partly An open structure lets allergens accumulate Polyester Fill No Traps moisture, encourages dust mite growth Down / Feather No Common allergen trigger for many sleepers What to Avoid in a Mattress if You Have Allergies? What to Avoid The Problem Better Alternative Down or feather filling Strong allergen trigger Wool or latex fill Polyester padding Holds moisture and heat Organic cotton or latex Foam with high VOCs Off-gassing irritants that affect the airways CertiPUR-US certified foam Non-encased springs Hollow coils collect dust and debris Dense latex or memory foam Untreated covers Absorb sweat and allergens quickly Hypoallergenic mattress protector The Role of a Mattress Protector and Topper A hypoallergenic mattress protector creates a physical barrier between you and whatever has accumulated inside your current mattress. Encasement-style protectors are the most effective because they zip around the entire mattress rather than just covering the top surface.  A hypoallergenic mattress topper adds a layer of allergy-resistant material above your existing sleep surface. Natural latex and wool are the most practical choices. They improve comfort while keeping the surface less hospitable to allergens. For anyone not ready to replace their mattress entirely, a quality hypoallergenic mattress pad or topper is a sensible middle step. Choosing the Right Size A hypoallergenic single mattress is the most common choice for children's rooms, where allergy management often takes priority. Children spend more time in bed proportionally, and their developing immune systems benefit from reduced allergen exposure during sleep. For couples, a hypoallergenic double mattress needs to balance allergy control with comfort for two sleepers. Latex and high-density foam both scale well at larger sizes. An encasement protector remains important regardless of size, because even the best mattress for allergy sufferers benefits from a sealed outer layer. Do Hypoallergenic Mattresses Actually Make a Difference? The evidence says yes, but only when the mattress is part of a wider approach. The best mattress for dust mite allergy removes the habitat those mites depend on: warmth, moisture, and loose fibres to nest in. An anti-dust mite mattress built from dense latex or sealed memory foam, paired with an encasement protector, is as close to a dust mite-free mattress as most people will realistically get. That said, a mattress alone will not eliminate allergens from a bedroom. Regular bedding washes, good ventilation, and keeping humidity below 50% all contribute. Dust mites thrive in humid environments. The mattress addresses the biggest concentration of exposure; the other habits address the rest. What to Check Before You Buy? Certifications: OEKO-TEX, GOLS, GOTS, or CertiPUR-US Dense or sealed core construction with no hollow interior Removable, machine-washable cover No down, feather, or polyester fill Pair with a hypoallergenic mattress protector from day one  The hours spent in bed are too many to spend breathing in what a standard mattress collects over time. For anyone dealing with asthma, eczema, hay fever, or a confirmed dust mite sensitivity, a hypoallergenic mattress is one of the more practical steps available. It does not replace medical advice, but it does address one of the most consistent and overlooked sources of daily allergen exposure.
